Invest in a good safety net -
like the trapeze artist

The trapeze artist dares to let go and fly! Her strength, skills, and  flexibility can only take her so far though. To have the courage to let go and leap forward, she's had to invest in a good safety net.

For many of us, good support at work and in our personal lives is key to enabling us to do all we do. When you know the support is there, whether it is practical or emotional, you can feel comfortable stretching yourself further.

At work support comes in many guises - an active cheering on by someone who knows when you most need it, someone who steps in at a moment's notice when the kids are ill, the team who rally round when there's peak workload, the manager who proposes meetings at times that work! And, and, and

In our home lives, support is invaluable - someone you can download your day to/with, someone you can bounce random ideas off, someone who makes things easier for you in some way, someone who actively helps you with your out of work commitments, someone to have some fun with and who helps you restore your balance in some way. And a whole heap more.

At times, we may look outside our immediate networks for support - a professional, a website, friends of friends, someone you hardly know but find yourself spilling it all out to, a new work colleague you immediately click with.

Yet how often do we call in our support? and how strenuously have we tested out this safety net? In a circus, you'd do this pretty regularly!

There are times when we might have to "drop everything" - either at work, or at home. Or both! I have tested this "both" out several times now - (not deliberately of course). And it does give you a new sense of security to know that there are people who really are there for you.

Do we always accept the support that is available and offered? Do we make the most of the company policies which are there to support working parents? Do we ask for the help we need?  I strongly suspect not - based on the conversations I have with mums, and on my own experience.

Why not test out your safety net? How much more will you reach for when you know it's strong, it's powerful and it's there?

And if there are weaknesses in the net? Things changing as people move on, as your role changes, as your children grow? Prioritise investment in your safety net - so you can keep on your magnificent flying trapeze act!

Who are the people at the four corners of your safety net? Do you have options for - helping with your work, helping with your children, helping with your home, helping you keep in balance?

How comfortable do you feel asking for support? Do you know what to say, how to say it, and when is the right moment to ask?

Do you know what could help you most? Or who? Does this change at different times?

What support do you feel is missing right now? What difference could it make if you had a solution for this?

What support can you offer? Reciprocal arrangements can work well at home or at work.

What's your back up plan in case you have a crisis - at work, or at home? Does someone else know how to kick this in if you can't?

I have some other ideas on building a support network in this Article on support on Alive to Change Website

If you're feeling a lack of support at home or at work, I have a Rebuilding your Support Network workshop which is available 1-1. Just ask me for details - kirstin@alivetochange.com.

Welcome to the fourth issue of Tips from the Big Top, my newsletter for Mums who are juggling home and work commitments. My aim each month is to explore a different aspect of our lives and offer some timely reminders about the things we can do for ourselves to make our lives as working mums as fun and fulfilling as possible. I use the Circus Theme because there are so many great images and concepts we can relate to in the Big Top!

A very warm welcome to so many new subscribers - it is great to see the word spreading in this way, and please keep sharing this with other working mums. And do let me know what you'd like to see covered in here.

I've set another date for the Beyond the Juggling Act workshop - Sunday 26th May, 9.30am-12pm. This is a wonderful occasion for sharing ideas, experiences, challenges, dreams - and to leave feeling motivated to tackle some practical next steps. And laughter is guaranteed - or your money back. I already have  sign ups, so is you're interested in securing your place, please let me know, or sign up on the Facebook page (Event Page).

If you want to keep in contact with Alive to Change between newsletters, please check out and like (and share) Facebook Page. This is where I post random ideas and inspiration, as well as details of forthcoming workshops.

I am also holding an Open House event called Invincible Mums Abroad
- on Thursday 13th June. It is Open House at 7 rue du Landskron, Leymen from 11am to 8pm, so you can pop in after work if you have the chance - apèro served from 6pm. Bring your children too if you like. I'll be joined by several friends who offer services and support to Mums Abroad, and there'll be different things happening during the day - more information in the next Tips.

I am also getting increased interest for evening, weekend or virtual versions of some of the workshops I run during the day - over the coming months I will be exploring ways of opening up more of these slots in a way that is sustainable for me too as a working mum! Watch this space - and do let me know if you have any ideas or requests.

If you need help in any aspect of your own personal juggling act, and you'd like to find out whether and how coaching could help, I offer a free exploratory session (face to face or on the phone). I also offer coaching workshops in and out of the workplace, and, skill sharpener sessions in groups or 1-1.

I welcome any feedback you have on this newsletter - and any ideas for future topics you'd like to see explored.

All the best
Kirstin
