Roots and Wings March 2013
A newsletter for Mums Abroad
Dear all,

kbFebruary was a month that was short on days but by no means short on activity and excitement this year. It's Birthday Month in our family - five family birthdays in close succession, all well celebrated. It is a real treat to hand over a present in person and exchange a hug and kiss!

The first half of February whizzed by in a blur of village carnival, a coaching at work workshop at PWG, several celebrations of Tina's 13th birthday, recording a CD with choir, singing new high notes with musical theatre and, the highest of all high points, dancing with my daughters at the One Billion Rising Basel Flashmob Dance.

Feeling ready for a break, we piled on a plane half way through February to head to our three UK "homes" - rural Cumbria, the far north of Scotland and Yorkshire. Unusually for us, we managed to combine seeing all our family without the usual mad dash, some decent walks and the chance to read loads of books. I got to have a lovely coffee with my fabulous friend as our daughters shopped together. Time stood still for us for a while to allow us to catch up. It was a precious time - meeting our new nephew, just a couple of weeks old and oblivious to all the fuss; and seeing John's Grandad, now 92, who despite being unclear on many things nowadays, was very clear that he was delighted with our visit.

I wonder whether, living abroad, we pay extra attention to these moments?

Now we're looking forward to Mad March! Once the girls go back to school next week, my time is "mine" again, to do with what I will. And I'm feeling full of ideas and energy to make them happen. Is that because my batteries have been recharged by the fresh sea air? I'd like to think so.

So in a spur of the moment, moment of March Madness, I'd like to issue an invitation to you all (well, you Basel based readers, anyway!) - instead of the usual Coaching Circle on Tuesday 12th March, I'd like to open the doors for an Alive to Change Coffee Morning. Nothing fancy or perfect, just a chance to connect with other mums in a very relaxed, positive and supportive setting! Drop in any time from 9.30am, stay as long as you like, bring a friend. It's all good!

If you've got a bit of a Mad Idea this March, check out my Mums with Mad Ideas!  page - I'd love to get together a small coaching circle around this, to help you get the energy and motivation to make your Mad Idea a fantastic reality.

If you enjoy reading Roots and Wings, and would like a more regular dose of positive vibes, please check out (like, share . . ) my Alive to Change Facebook page

And if you think you're going slightly mad, going round in circles with a problem or project - give me a shout for your free exploratory coaching session.

Thank you, as ever, for your readership and your continued support.

Marching on!

Your Coach

Go Mad this March!

clownPerhaps it's the sun which is not only out but also switched on as I write this, but I have the sudden urge to encourage you to go mad! Images of gambolling lambs, leaping hares and bulbs suddenly bursting into life come to mind as I eagerly anticipate the start of Spring.

Of course, I may be getting ahead of nature here - Spring will emerge exactly when it wants to. But that mustn't stop us shaking off the winter blahs by doing something different, colourful, new, exciting!

Now my new, exciting and a little bit bonkers won't be the same as yours - we are each spontaneous in our own special ways! So it is up to you to work out what you're going to say Yes to - and perhaps you already know!

Expanding out of our comfort zones into our "courage" zone gives us the opportunity to stretch ourselves and learn more about our potential. Don't we encourage our children to try new things? What better way to teach them this (and to give them a surprise) than to do something unexpected ourselves!

It doesn't even have to be a big thing. Just adding a wild colour into your Spring wardrobe could help. Or buying your children a bunch of flowers just because.  Making contact with someone you met only once but who really made you laugh.  Or writing that opening chapter and just sending it right off to the competition without hesitation.

Or it could be a Big Thing. Take that plunge. Make your fresh start. Throw it all out. Repaint it all bright yellow. Commit to the next step you know you've been avoiding because everyone will notice.

Let them look! Let them stare!

Be bold, brave and slightly barmy.

And then give yourself a round of applause.

If you'd like to explore coaching . . .

I offer a free exploratory session which is a great opportunity to find out more about what coaching involves. People come into coaching for all kinds of reasons - and leave with all kind of plans and solutions. I love to work with people when they really want something to change in their lives and are ready to make it happen. Change feels different when you're working with a coach - somehow more manageable, more fun, more exciting!

The exploratory session lasts between 30-45 minutes, can be done over the phone, and comes with no strings attached.

If' you're thinking of changing something and need a little help coming up with some options, a plan or two, a way forward, let's explore it!
