Roots and Wings February 2013
A newsletter for Mums Abroad
Dear all,

kb I've been really looking forward to writing this Roots and Wings. In fact I look forward to taking the time every month to sit down with myself and an ever evolving and always stunning view from the office window as inspiration.

What feels so special about writing this? I think it is partly that I'm getting some lovely feedback (and when you work "on your own", that's pretty special in itself) - Thank You. It's also because I often find myself writing things I didn't realise I was going to say. And it's a lot because this newsletter records my own development as much as, I hope, it provokes you into thinking about yours.

I'm looking back on a highly energising month - full of variety and new experiences, balanced by time outside getting some exercise and inside alone with my 3000 piece jigsaw.  I've found myself doing yoga,  teaching the One Billion Rising Basel Flashmob Dance (it's not too late to join us on 14th Feb!),  writing a blog just to see if I liked the process (I'm still reflecting on that!), adding some pages to my website, including the experimental page called Mums with Mad Ideas! .And l've got into the habit of putting little bits and pieces on my Facebook page, and am really enjoying this daily interaction.

So experimentation and just testing things out has worked for me in January, although I now suspect February could well be a month for consolidation!

Some of us find January a bit early to start our new year resolutions. In many ways February is a better month to try something new - after all, it's shorter! I'm very happy to believe that "February is the new January" (thanks for the phrase- you know who you are!!). And whatever you try that is new for you - celebrate that you've done it. It's all good!!

February is certainly a month for celebration in our family. We hope to welcome a new nephew next week, we celebrate both my mum's and my mother in law's birthday, as well as a niece's. However, the biggest celebration will be for Tina as she enters her teen years.  I've a small feeling that my newly discovered yoga breathing is going to come in handy . . .

February is also carnival time around here - get ready to be covered in confetti for 5 minutes and be still finding it in inconvenient places 5 months later!!

Enjoy your February!

Ever had a Butterfly Day?

A Butterfly Day is one of those days where we flit with no apparent focus. Perhaps you pop onto your computer and get sidetracked by an interesting internet site. You spot an amusing cartoon and share with your Facebook world. You may start writing your to do list and feel attracted to doing something not on there, before you've even finished. The phone rings and you have an unscheduled conversation. An idea pops into your mind and you follow it. You type the title and first line into a brand new document - and then head off to a meeting - with the board, the ironing or the girls. You suddenly remember to follow up on a conversation from 3 days ago.

Do you know those days?

We can judge these days and call ourselves names. We can beat ourselves up and believe all kinds of unpleasant and untrue things about ourselves. If we like!

Or we can welcome and accept these days, and thank goodness for our flighty side. Because I think these days have a real purpose for us. For example, when you're flitting, you're moving (that's a good thing, isn't it?). When our mind wanders, it can feel more rested, or it might get really creative (think about when you get your very best ideas - is it while rampaging through a to do list, or while flitting?). When you're flitting, you've got variety (keeps us motivated). When you're flitting, dare I say you might even do some fun things that don't ever make it onto your to do list when you're being focused but are more memorable in the long term than those that do? And while I'm here, let me also suggest that on a Butterfly Day we somehow have the time to allow in helpful distractions - like a random phonecall, like a dip into some new information, a corridor chat that leads perhaps somewhere unexpected.

I think we need to schedule Butterfly Days in our agendas. I suspect, if we had them often enough, we'd get a lot more done!!

I happen to enjoy those days, once I realise that's what I'm having. There's always a moment of panic, a sense that there is something I'm not managing to do . . and then I ease into it gracefully. There is always another day to focus - today I'm going to flit a little!

If you'd like to explore coaching . . .

I offer a free exploratory session which is a great opportunity to find out more about what coaching involves. People come into coaching for all kinds of reasons - and leave with all kind of plans and solutions. I love to work with people when they really want something to change in their lives and are ready to make it happen. Change feels different when you're working with a coach - somehow more manageable, more fun, more exciting!

The exploratory session lasts between 30-45 minutes, can be done over the phone, and comes with no strings attached.

If' you're thinking of changing something and need a little help coming up with some options, a plan or two, a way forward, let's explore it!

Thank You
This year more than any other year I'm feeling that the work I'm doing with Mums Abroad through Alive to Change is really starting to come together in the way I originally envisioned. There's a part of my work I get paid for, and much more that I do through pure passion!

I've got plenty more ideas and am excited to be working with other people who share a similar dream to develop more things to offer families abroad. In many ways we are very fortunate to be living in some amazing places and to have the opportunities we do - and in other ways, we have some additional challenges and choices. I am inspired on a daily basis by the talents and potential of the Mums Abroad I work with and know. I love to see these talents and individuals come to life.
