Roots and Wings December 2012
Dear all,

So I'm putting a non-stop November to bed, and waking up to a different December. It's different this year because we are not going home home for Christmas, we're staying here home.

And that's not the only way it is going to be different. Since October, I've been getting emails from well meaning websites highlighting seasonal stress, difficulties in getting "it all done" this Christmas, about how hard, challenging, rush, complicate, perfect,  busy . . ." it's going to be. Well, I am not buying that this year. I have decided that my December is going to be different. Can we just decide things like that? I don't know - let's see! Look to your write for what I'd like to be saying about my December this year . . .

Part of this comes from it being a full on November for Alive to Change, with new workshop projects as well as my regular work with individual clients. I love the energy and new ideas that come in a group environment, and the way this works to enable more people to take steps forward in their lives. So I'm planning plenty more for the new year. I hope to see you at one soon!!

In November, I also (finally) ran the Basel Stadtlauf, and was very proud of myself for not just enduring it but also enjoying it (in an out of breath and very hot kind of way)! I'd been finding every excuse in the book beforehand to avoid it - it was a real battle of wills - the side of me that really wanted to achieve this, and the other (fairly persuasive) side of me that really wanted to flop on the sofa and drink wine. Luckily I had the right person come along at the right time and say the right thing (Thanks Kate).  Yep, coaches need coaching too!

When we set out to achieve something new, most of our challenge is to get into the right headspace.   And this is what my job as a coach is all about - enabling you to get your head around what you want to do, how you're going to do it - and how to motivate yourself to get going! So in the new year, I'm bringing together all my best thought-provoking, re-energising and motivational exercises in a New You 2013 kick off workshop. One physical, one virtual. Check out dates and times to your right and down a bit!

And finally, I'd like to thank you all for your incredible support over the past year. Whether you've been a client, come to a workshop, sent me ideas and feedback, listened to my rambling ideas as they take shape or liked my Facebook page . . . it's all much appreciated. Well done to those who have taken big steps forward in their lives this year - keep up the good work! And to you all, I wish you all a wonderful time in the lead up to Christmas.

A Guest Article - Happy Holidays?

 By Joanne Johnson

Happy Holidays?

Preserving sanity and relationships.

How is the holiday season for you?

Is it a time of joy and peace at yours? Tables laden with beautifully cooked food, family all gathered, smiling faces all round, sharing warmth and laughter.

Or is it a time of stress, racing from one relatives' house to another, present buying whilst the bank balance dwindles, children's excitement rising to fever pitch, staying up all hours to wrap, cook and pack, tempers flaring and relationships becoming fraught with unspoken and unmet expectations.

Many of us living in Basel are living away from our home country perhaps for the first time and expectations for perfect family celebrations are often higher.

Whatever you really want this Christmas - whether it can be unwrapped or simply appreciated - why keep it to yourself? While some parts of the seasonal adventure may feel out of our control, we can still make choices, influence decisions and make the most of the various gifts we receive - physical and metaphorical!

And let's remember that this is a time of celebration - whatever you believe and celebrate. So we don't have to be hard on ourselves -  we can simply unpack the decorations, hand them over to the kids to put up, and we pour yourself a glass of something you enjoy, take a large helping of time to yourself - and come on, let's dive into December . . .
