A Personal Note from Connie
|
August 9, 2013
Hi there:
Director of Golf Performance, Ali Gilbert, and Golf Fitness Professional, Matt Atkins, featured in the September 13' issue of Golf Digest.
How's your week been? Any vacation plans this month? A few of us will be taking a couple of days off over the next few weeks, but for the most part, things will continue to hum along as usual here in August!
We're proud to announce that we had not one, but two Elite Health Services Golf Performance Professionals featured in the September 2013 issue of Golf Digest magazine. Both Ali Gilbert and Matt Atkins were asked to demonstrate golf fitness related exercises (picture above) for the magazine's readership.
All of us will be rooting for Coach Steve Kurczewski this weekend as he's out in Milwaukee, WI to compete in the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. This Olympic-distance race is acclaimed for featuring one the nation's top age group fields and serves as a qualifier for Team USA.
And last, but not least, a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY (today!) to Studio Fitness Trainer, Jimmy Coscina!
PS. If you missed the EHS Team Retreat pictures I posted on Facebook earlier this week, you can find all 60 of them HERE. Cheers to enjoying the weekend, Connie Scholl Kurczewski

How to Avoid Muscle Cramps
with Dave Potucek, MSPT CFMT
What is a muscle cramp?
A muscle cramp is an involuntarily and forcibly contracted muscle that does not relax. There are many different types and causes for muscle cramps. The most common cause is overactive nerves caused by a variety of factors.
- Injuries cause protective spasm to minimize the movement and stabilize the area of injury
- Vigorous activity can use all the energy (ATP) and oxygen in muscles causing them to cramp
- Resting cramps can occur at night for no reason (pointing toe in bed and getting cramp)
- Dehydration can cause cramps due to unusual distribution of body fluids
- Low calcium and magnesium causes the nerves to be overactive causing cramps
- Low potassium can cause cramps but is usually associated with muscle weakness
- Many medications such as diuretics can cause cramping
- Deficiency in some B Vitamins can cause cramps
What can I do for muscle cramps?
- Typically stretching the muscle is the most common solution to a muscle cramp
- Massage or soft tissue manual therapy techniques can reduce spasm (come see us at EHS)
- Rehydration with water and electrolytes can stop cramping if this is the cause (think Gatorade)
- MDs may prescribe muscle relaxers or use Botox injections for severe cases
- Heat can be applied to tense/tight muscles
- Cold can be applied to achy/sore muscles
Call your doctor if your muscle cramps:
- Are severe
- Do not go away with any of the above methods
- Keep coming back
- Last a long time

"Thanks to Agata, I have not only been able to improve my overall athletic performance but she specifically helped me succeed in achieving my sub 3:30 marathon goal."

"Agata has been giving me deep tissue massages for over a year now. Originally, I hired her to help me ease my muscle pain after my long runs while training for the New York City Marathon. However, she quickly became an essential part of my training and overall health; her incredible massage techniques kept my muscles relaxed from one session to the next; she facilitated perfect alignment of my body by thoroughly working each and every muscle group and ultimately she has kept me injury throughout all my work-outs. Her strong hands can eliminate any knot or tension but her long experience of working with athletes make her tremendously aware to each individual's threshold of pain; she perfectly balances deep tissue treatments while still maintaining the relaxation factor during the massage. Thanks to Agata, I have not only been able to improve my overall athletic performance but she specifically helped me succeed in achieving my sub 3:30 marathon goal. Her determination to work out any tension on whatever muscle she might be working on has greatly improved my flexibility and range of motion. In addition to her outstanding professionalism and ability as a massage therapist, Agata's respectful and kind demeanor is always a true pleasure to look forward to every time she comes. I would be happy to discuss any questions about the value of massage therapy. Please feel free to contact me."
