A Personal Note from Connie
July 19, 2013

Hey there:

ElvistheServiceDog
Coach Clare Zecher and triathlete Amy Dixon with Elvis the service dog
at Elite Health Services on Thursday afternoon.

I hope you're managing to stay cool and well hydrated during these 'dog days of summer' that are officially upon us here in Greenwich.  Speaking of cool dogs, we were happy to have triathlete, Amy Dixon, working out here yesterday with her handsome and hard-working service dog, Elvis, by her side.  Elvis enjoyed a well-deserved break here in the air-conditioning while Coach Clare took Amy through her interval run on the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill.  (Between you and me, I think Elvis would have preferred a swim workout instead!)

I'm excited to announce that we've added a brand new "How-To" video section to our newsletter.  Each week our team of Physical Therapists and Fitness Trainers will provide you with a brief demonstration of one of the many therapeutic and performance related exercises they use daily with their patients and clients.  Check out today's Abdominal Series demonstration and then let me know if there is a specific exercise you would like to see featured in an upcoming issue.  Until then, have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,

Certified Functional Manual Therapy
Treating Viscera with Viscera Functional Manual Physical Therapy (Part One)
with Tara Gibson, DPT

What are the viscera?

The viscera refer to all the organs in your chest and abdomen and include: Heart, lungs, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, esophagus, stomach, small & large intestines, kidney, & bladder. In women it also includes your uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries; in men the prostate.

I thought that was for the medical doctors to address. How are the viscera related to physical therapy?

Though visceral problems must often be addressed through medical interventions, we find that frequently a problem related to digestion, a women's health issue, or even a simple low back pain may be a mechanical visceral problem and can be resolved with gentle Functional Manual Therapy (FMT) techniques. Our goal is to not only reduce or eliminate painful symptoms, but to help prevent their return. Often medication dosages can be decreased or discontinued all together in some cases, but only with physician approval.

How do you treat the viscera?

For organs to function properly, they must be able to slide on each other. Just like when we injure our muscles and joints, or have to undergo surgery, the scar tissue that forms in the healing process makes us stiffer than before. It is important to have this tissue mobilized as part of the rehabilitation process to be healthy again. Well, the same thing can happen with organs. Scar tissue develops from either: an abdominal surgery like removal of the gall bladder, appendix, C-sections, etc., or from inflammation in the digestive tract related to poor diet, food allergies (i.e. gluten), food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome, or acid reflux. Also, the organs can get stuck together from either hormonal issues related to menstrual cycles or menopause, or from mechanical issues such as poor breathing mechanics, bad posture, sedentary lifestyles, or from stress. When these "stuck" places are mobilized through FMT, we find the organs can function in a healthier way and pain is often resolved.

How would I know if I have a visceral problem that physical therapy can address?

The body is very complex obviously. But here are a few examples of organs and the symptoms that could be related to their dysfunction:

  • Liver - Fatigue, Right shoulder pain or limited mobility, right frontal headache, depression
  • Gallbladder - Stomach issues / right scapular pain especially after eating greasy or heavy foods, ulcers
  • Esophagus, stomach - Acid reflux, abdominal pains soon after eating
  • Small intestine - low back pain, Crohn's disease, Celiac (gluten intolerance), sciatica, painful menstruation, pelvic congestion, diverticulitis
  • Colon - constipation, appendectomy, Crohns disease, hip / knee problems, sciatica, IBS, impotence, varicose veins

Stay tuned next week for PART 2 of the visceral discussion. There's more to come related to the kidneys, bladder, women's health organs, and the coccyx (it's integral relationship to viscera).

"As someone who was told she needed surgery to resolve her pain, it is great to be pain free now, and back to doing what I love."

  KristinSampiere

"I was recommended to Elite Health Services by my CrossFit coach to resolve an ongoing shoulder injury.  Heather Whiting did an amazing job of correcting the issue so that I could go about my daily activities as well as resume my CrossFit training pain-free for the first time in months.

Besides seeing Heather for my physical therapy sessions, I was able to attend three evening Injury Prevention Workshops.  The first was a timely workshop about Resolving Persistent Shoulder Pain.  The workshop by Brad Gilden gave me additional insight into the issue I had been having for the last few months with my shoulder.  The talk also gave me exercises and stretches to supplement the ones given by Heather.

The other two workshops that I attended were "Correcting Your Swimming Technique to Avoid Shoulder Injury" and "Running Workshop; Forefoot or Rearfoot Strike?".  Both were extremely informative and gave me additional information for sports in which I enjoy participating.  I found the swimming one relevant due to the fact that I want to prevent any further injury to my shoulder.  As someone who has just been a recreation runner, it was interesting to find out more about the science behind forefoot and rearfoot strike running.

I was also able to participate in the complimentary running analysis.  Working with Brad gave me insight into how I run.  He gave me tips for improvement, as well as things to look for when I am running.  It was a nice compliment to Matt's workshop.

I find that as I go about my movements in CrossFit, or on my runs, I think back to things I learned in the workshops and in my sessions with Heather.  I would highly recommend Heather and the staff at EHS.   Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and friendly.  As someone who was told she needed surgery to resolve her pain, it is great to be pain free now, and back to doing what I love. Having these positive results without the risks and uncertain recovery of surgery is allowing me to move forward more quickly.  Learning new skills and strategies that are allowing me participate fully in my active lifestyle allows me to trust my body and is very affirming.
