It's been a while since I've recommended games for your family to play. I'm a believer in the power of games to strengthen bonds - even more so after the holidays!
Here are three excellent choices.
#1: Prolix
I love word games. Scrabble, Password, and Smart Mouth are all winners.
One you may never have heard of, but that should be in your game closet, is Prolix.
Prolix scales well from 1-5 players and has rules designed to keep it interesting for all players simultaneously (no more falling asleep while Uncle John takes 45 minutes to select his next word in Scrabble).
#2: The Resistance
Find the spies before they conspire successfully to win the game. You'll have to be able to tell who is being truthful and who is leading you astray.
The Resistance is for 5-10 players (the more, the better), moves fast, and is over quickly.
Personally I like this better than its companion game Coup which is also fun.
#3: Telestrations
If Pictionary isn't your thing, there's still hope with Telestrations.
In this game, players draw a picture representing a word or phrase they have selected. Then they pass their sketch book to the next player who looks at the picture and writes down a guess as to what the word or phrase may be. The sketch book is passed to the next player who looks at the guessed word or phrase and then draws a picture representing it. This continues around the circle until everyone has had a chance to draw or guess in each person's sketch book. The best part of this game is that the initial word often evolves into something entirely unrelated and the pictures are often hilarious.
The game moves quickly. We've never bothered to keep score or to identify a winner. Everyone wins as you end up laughing together. The original version is for up to 8 players and is best with 8.
The family that plays games together experiences intergenerational bonding!
