Most gifts deteriorate over time - some barely make it to the New Year (think radio-controlled cars or indoor helicopters for kids).
But there are gifts that actually improve with age. Here are three - I'd love to hear about others you've shared and experienced.
#1: Faith
When faith is lived out consistently it has real power in your life and in the lives of those around you. This isn't put-on faith that is meant to impress others, but life-giving faith that sustains you during life's inevitable challenges and brings joy when you might naturally despair.
I trust that during this season and throughout the coming year you will experience a deepening faith that is attractive to others.
#2: Education
I'm referring to education in the broadest sense - growing, learning, ever-becoming the person you were created to be. An appreciation of and investment in education is a wonderful gift. We had a friend who completed her PhD in her 70s. While some wondered why, she wondered, "Why not?"
Look for opportunities to invest in your growth and the growth of those around you this coming year.
#3: Tradition
Traditions do not have to be profound to be meaningful. We are eclectic Christmas tree decorators - we buy ornaments for the kids each year representing various interests and stages of life, as well as ornaments from our travels. Our children may well marry into a gold ribbon and blue ornaments tree tradition and then they'll have to negotiate the blending of traditions that is part of every marriage.
Consider the food, the celebrations, the sayings that are associated with your family and keep those traditions alive. They draw us together and are one of the many ways we honor those who have come before us.
What are some gifts that improve with age that you would add to this list?
Have a blessed Christmas with those you love!
