Creating an investment culture

The leaders I serve invest in their team members.  They see the value of healthy teams, effective communication, leadership development, and strategic planning.

There's always a danger that if you invest in your team members they will leave and your investment will not benefit you directly.  But as the cartoon below suggests, the cost of not investing in your people may be far greater.

#1: Creating a culture of investment

Even if you are unintentionally preparing employees to make an even greater impact with other organizations, you are creating an investment culture where employees know they are valued - where you are committed to seeing them grow and succeed.  This will attract better quality team members to your organization and over the long run is typically a net positive.

#2: When to hire a "B" player

Some positions are best served by "A" players who make a significant short-term impact before moving on, even if that is to a position outside your organization.  Some positions are best served by "B" players who are reliable, trustworthy, and desire to be retained long-term. Turnover is not always a problem, but it can be unnecessarily disruptive if you hire "A" players for roles that are insufficiently challenging, provide little prospect for growth, and from which they will always be looking for their next roles.

#3: The value of training to you as a leader

Often the context of employee investment involves training sessions where you as the leader are fully capable of presenting the material and guiding the conversation.  But if you invest in an outside facilitator you will be able to observe your team members as they are interacting and growing.  You will learn more by observation than facilitation.

Questions to consider:
1) Do you lead an investment culture?
2) Do team members know you are committed to their growth and development?
3) Do you see the value in an outside facilitator who provides training sessions designed to maximize your investment?
4) Do you need to have a fall kickoff event for your team?

We would love the opportunity to serve you as you invest in the future of your organization and its people!

Each month I write two newsletters - the one that you are reading currently and one dedicated to Effective Family Communication.  If you are already receiving and reading both, that's great.

This month's topic for Effective Family Communication was Step in close.  See the buds.  Be encouraged!" (click on the link to read it)  It was prompted by a sudden appearance of leaves and the reality that those leaves came from buds that are often unseen.
