In "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," Stephen Covey provides a way to visualize our use of time. We have four boxes that correspond to items that are urgent / not urgent and important / not important (see below).
The key to life is to be productive in Quadrant #2: Important / Not Urgent. These elements impact us significantly over the long term, but can be ignored for extended periods without our suffering obvious injury. Examples include regular physical exercise, updating your resume, writing that note of thanks to your long-ago mentor, planning your trip to Hawaii, preparing your will and having it witnessed, reading scripture on a daily basis, talking with your child about how a checking account works, and so on.
My encouragement to you: Make a list of Quadrant #2 items in your life and commit to adding one per month to your routine or achieving one per month in 2015. Even though your list may be far longer than 10 items (Mar-Dec), this will be a start in addressing what is important, but not urgent.
That's it. Now go and make that list and select your Quadrant #2 item for March.
