ELCA Kicks Off Shoe Collection
ELCA "kicked off" a school project to collect closed-toe shoes for school-aged children in Guatemala. Currently, Shelby Ausband, a 2008 graduate of Eagle's Landing Christian Academy, has been called to service in this country. Shelby felt God leading her to an additional role in the lives of the people with whom she worked in Guatemala. Since many of the children cannot attend school because they do not own a pair of closed-toe shoes, Shelby decided to help the children by fulfilling this basic need. Her non-profit organization is called Purshoeing Joy, and its goal is to provide gently used closed-toe shoes for children. God has blessed her endeavor through not only donations of shoes but as Miss Ausband reported, also in Delta Air Lines covering the shipping costs and a Guatemalan business agreeing to assist in replacing any damaged soles on the shoes. During a special chapel service, Shelby challenged the students to collect 1,000 pairs by May 9. The students enthusiastically accepted the challenge. Beginning April 28 through May 9, the ELCA Student Council is asking elementary, middle, and high school students to bring gently used closed-toe shoes of all sizes. Teachers will provide labels for names and sizes to be placed in the shoes for identification. Miss Auband's eventual goal is to post a picture of each child with his/her shoes so that ELCA students may make a connection with the children of Guatemala. You can access Shelby's blog. The website is currently under construction but may later be accessed at www.purshoeingjoy.org. More

A Capitol Experience in D.C.
Eighth grade students, parents, and teachers traveled to Washington, D.C. on April 1-4. Students were able to physically experience history as they explored and toured the Naval Academy, monuments, memorials, and museums. They enjoyed an evening visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Jefferson, FDR and Lincoln monuments. The war memorials were a favorite among the students. The memorials that were included on the tour were Vietnam, Korean, and World War II. The visit to the Holocaust Museum and Arlington was contemplative, especially due to the fact that the students were blessed to meet and interview a holocaust survivor originally from northern Poland. Time was spent exploring the museum of their choice at the Smithsonian and taking a tour of the U. S. Capitol Building. The students spent time in prayer at three key locations - the White House, Capitol Building, and the Supreme Court, which represent the three branches of government. The students were blessed to be able to connect classroom knowledge to many historical U.S. locations. |

Alum, Travis Mamon, Class of 2012 Has Us Covered
Travis Mamon was a senior in high school at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy in his hometown of Jonesboro, Ga., when he told his mom he was going to start his own clothing line, an idea he conceived while working on a class project.
"How are you going to do that?" she asked him. "You don't know anything about fashion design."
Technically, she was right. But Mamon had a few other things going for him that mattered more than experience, namely, ambition, determination, and a sartorial sixth sense. More
