Lady Chargers Softball Soars Through State Championship Tournament
The girls' Varsity Softball team traveled to Columbus this past week to play in the Georgia High School Association's softball State Championship. They went 4-0 in the eight team double elimination tournament, which included two wins against Prince Avenue Christian and the state's best pitcher in Class A. ELCA beat Prince Avenue in the tournament finale 3-1 on Saturday. The team brought home ELCA's fifth softball State Championship in the last eight years. Coach Doug Campbell, Coach Bo Rush, Coach Valerie Fields, and Coach Jon Brewer did an amazing job of taking a very, young team and winning a state championship. "Our girls have worked very hard since July to prepare for this moment and it has paid off. This is a young team that will return everybody next year, so we are excited about the future as well. God has blessed us with a great group of girls most of which have attended ELCA since elementary school."- Doug Campbell, Head Coach.

The World in Our Doors at the Parade of Nations
| Parade of Nations 2013 |
On October 30 ELCA's annual Parade of Nations took place.
Preschool students dressed up as "community helpers," while elementary students dressed up in costumes representing ten different countries. The countries that were represented were as follows: USA, Mexico, Romania, Italy, Hungary, Guatemala, China, Australia, Nicaragua, and Turkey. The students paraded throughout the entire school and ended the parade in the worship center for a special missions program entitled, "Are We There Yet?", presented by students in grades 3 and 4. High school students Conner Smith and Emily West also shared presentations and their personal experiences on mission trips to Nicaragua and Guatemala. All of the students performed well. Through song and speech the students encouraged us all to go out and share the Gospel.

High School Students Compete in WSB-TV's High Q
ELCA was chosen as one of the 32 teams to participate in this year's rendition of the popular high school quiz show, WSB-TV's High Q. ELCA first participated in High Q during the 2010-2011 school year; winning three rounds and making it to the semi-final round before falling to the eventual winner, Walton High School.
This year ELCA faced Prince Avenue Christian in the first round of competition on October 23. ELCA and Prince Avenue were neck and neck during the first two rounds before falling behind during the third round (Open round) of the match. The final score of this engaging contest was Prince Avenue 555 - ELCA 435.
Honorably representing the ELCA Chargers in this year's High Q competition were Coach Don Moseley and team members: seniors Marissa Randolph and Michael Hunt, juniors Zach Balty and Shannon Zitz with alternates, senior Jamie Arvey and sophomores Josh Wallace, Erin Jagus, Casey Wang, and Akhil Amin. |
Middle School Leadership Conference
On October 16, ELCA middle school students joined nine other Christian schools for the ACSI Middle School Leadership Conference hosted at North Cobb Christian School. One student representative from each advisory group attended the conference. The conference speaker, Brian Burchik, encouraged the students to follow Jesus to the fullest. The students participated in group challenges including setting goals, overcoming difficult situations, and developing perseverance. The conference concluded in a time of school vision casting where the students prayed for their school and discussed future school opportunities. The students discussed a monthly vision, yearly vision, and five-year vision for ELCA middle school. These students are presently planning and leading a time of prayer in advisories (monthly vision), a day where they can go off campus and serve in a local assisted living facility (yearly vision), and future plans include community service days for all middle school students (five-year vision). The students were encouraged to run life's race according to Hebrews 12:1-3, "...and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross." |

Preschoolers Love Community Helpers

October is the month our K3 and K4 students celebrate community helpers. Throughout the month, the students have learned about different community helpers and how they impact everyday life. The first visitor was the dad of Cason Carrigan in Mrs. Allison's K4 class. Mr. Carrigan is a K9 Police Officer in DeKalb County, and he introduced the students to his partner Teico. The students enjoyed meeting and petting Teico while learning how Cason's dad works with Teico. Also, the students learned about several community helpers in our school. Officer Mike showed them his police car and talked with them about safety. Mrs. Judy and Mrs. Carol, ELCA school nurses, talked about the clinic and how they help students who get hurt or sick at school. Mr. Hylkema shared bus safety with the students and took them on a fun bus ride on campus to the football field. Chef Joe of Sage Dining talked about being a cook for the school and let the students decorate a yummy cookie. The students had a special visit from Fire Station 3 who taught about being a fireman. The students enjoyed looking at the fire engine and going through the fire house while learning about fire safety! The study of community helpers ended with the students dressing like their favorite community helper and parading around the school! Photos

Students Show Support on Pink Out Day
Faith, hope, love, strength, and courage are the survivor's armor in battling cancer. On October 31, the high school Student Council hosted Pink Out throughout the school in recognition of American Breast Cancer Awareness month. Faculty and students participated by making a $1 donation and wearing pink. Pink shirts and accessories dominated the halls of the high school, middle school, and elementary school as students and staff participated in awareness. All donations were collected in support of two ELCA teachers and have been forwarded to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and to Relay for Life. Photos

Support ELCA & Save on Your Taxes
Did you know that in 2008 the Georgia General Assembly passed a law that allowed both individuals and corporations to re-direct the tax dollars that they were already paying to the State of Georgia to support the private or Christian school of their choice? This law allowed families to not only tell the state what to do with the taxes they were already paying, but also allowed them to assist families with a demonstrated financial need that wanted an education alternative for their children. Also, the law allowed families the opportunity to gain a tax benefit on the taxes they were already paying the IRS. This program, Georgia GOAL, is still alive and well. Join so many other ELCA families who are already choosing to re-direct their tax dollars and save money personally (sometimes saving up to $2,900 per year) by contributing to Georgia GOAL. Reservations are being taken now for 2014, and it is anticipated that each of these credits will be claimed by early February. Please contact ELCA Director of Development, Al Hosford, at (678) 818-1031 to learn more about this program. |
Fine Arts Continues to Impress
Marching Band Festival
Our ELCA Mighty Charger Marching Band put on an impressive display as it performed its show at the Greater Atlanta Marching Festival at Rockdale County High School last month. There was a field of 24 bands from all around the metro Atlanta area competing, including five in our Class A division. Once again, our band made us proud with straight Superior ratings for Drum Major, Color Guard, and Percussion, as well as, Excellent for over all Band. (Superior is the highest rating!) We also brought home trophies for 3rd Place Drum Major, 2nd Place Percussion, 1st Place Color Guard, and 1st Place over all Band for Class A!

Fall Chorus Concert
Over 170 students from the Young Charger Chorale, Middle School and High School Chorus presented a fantastic evening of music, October 2. Music from various genres was enjoyed by all in attendance. The HS Mens Ensemble brought the house down with its southern gospel selections. DVDs from the concert are available for just $10. We look forward to ringing in the Christmas season, December 5 with another performance from our choirs.

Christian College Fair at ELCA
With 43 colleges represented, the Christian College Fair, sponsored by Point University and hosted here on campus, saw over 600 people in attendance. Along with parents and high school students from other campuses, ELCA students were able to talk with representatives from colleges from as far away as Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio in addition to Georgia schools like Covenant, Toccoa Falls, Shorter, and Point University.
The college fair gave students exposure to colleges with which they may not have been familiar. Students also discovered that many Christian colleges offer the same majors as many state universities while supporting an atmosphere where their beliefs and values are not only respected but encouraged. |

My Pet Rock Rocks
Rocky, Oscar, Herbert, Tony Rock, Hershey, Roxanne, Rocky Polo, Chris Rock, Iggy, Rock E. Feller, Squishy, and Rock Hudson were among the 85 "Pet Rocks" that deposited into Mr. Simpson's 6th Grade Earth Science classroom on Monday, October 28. Each student was required to find, name, and give a personality to his rock. In addition, he had to write a 500-750 word story on his rock's life experiences through the rock cycle. Some of the rocks were born at Magma Memorial Hospital, went to school in volcanoes during the igneous stage, went on amazing trips, solved crimes, or went swimming in the sedimentary stage, and finally got married, participated in many sports (football, basketball, gymnastics), or traveled to New Rock City or Rockdale County in the metamorphic stage. This project allowed the students to have fun while they studied minerals and rocks. The Class of 2020 ROCKS! Photos
"I liked the rock project even though it was a lot of hard work. I loved creating a character for fun. It was pretty intimidating looking at a blank piece of paper, but I made a great project." Jaylan Hinton
"The rock project was really fun! We got to make clothes and stuff to go on it." Jacob Pinder
"I would say it was a fun project, and I enjoyed doing it. I learned more about the rock cycle. I never thought about drawing or decorating a rock until this project." Krishna Patel |
"Incredibles" Performance by
Mrs. Dorsey's Class
Mrs. Dorsey's "Incredibles" performed for their parents on Friday, October 25. The parents of these superheroes were able to see what their child has learned since the beginning of August. These "Incredibles" have been learning and practicing how to be an incredible friend and "bucket filler" to others. They even sang a song, "Jesus is My Superhero", and he is so much better than Batman! |
