March Hot Sheet
2014

Dear

"We are all butterflies. Earth is our chrysalis."
LeeAnn Taylor

People often ask us how often they should practice hot yoga. This is our response: as much as you can is best. Once weekly is a good stretch, twice weekly is minimum for maintenance, three times a week or more creates real change.

When you practice consistently three times a week or more the yoga tends to take a front seat in your life and as a result you feel fantastic and want to keep it that way! A student just told me yesterday that she feels the yoga is her time to create peace in her life, actively. A strong practice naturally encourages a healthy lifestyle!

Spring is just around the corner! We have had a relatively mild winter although some awfully rainy days these past few weeks. It's great to see the sun shining and know that longer days are coming. Here are some great reasons to increase your practice this Spring...

Improve Your Flexibility
Strength and flexibility work together in yoga. Flexibility comes with time and practice. You do not
have to be flexible to start yoga. Flexibility comes as opposing muscle groups work together to lengthen. Regular stretching keeps joints lubricated, improves your body's ability to heal, reduces the likelihood of injury, and improves circulation and enhanced mobility.

Improves Your Athletic Performance.
Bikram Yoga is known to improve strength, balance, flexibility and mental focus. It also helps to increase lung capacity and cardiovascular health. Yoga offers greater body awareness, mental endurance and can help with a quicker recovery.  All of this help you stay on top of whatever game or sport you choose!

Maintain a healthy body weight.
A regular practice forces you to examine your eating habits and patterns and make healthier choices including drinking plenty of water and limiting  your overall alcohol and sugar intake. Many of the postures target specific internal organs. Bikram yoga is a natural and effective way to detox and cleanse the liver and kidneys. The intense sweating helps to balance PH levels in the body and reduce the build up of wastes. It also helps reduce stress, which helps with weight management. Yoga helps build strong muscles which burn away fat stores even when you are resting.

Improve the quality of your sleep. A good night's sleep is a treasure that money can't buy! Quality sleep helps you to look your best and be your best with others. It helps make every part of life better! People who suffer with chronic pain, anxiety, depression and also people who do a lot of shift work and experience changing sleep patterns can benefit greatly from a regular yoga practice.

Yoga is one of the few physical activities that promotes whole-body wellness. Many yoga postures calm the nervous system and balance the hormones in your brain, which can normalize your sleep cycle. Practicing yoga postures improves blood circulation throughout the body, nourishing all your organs, tissues and nerves even while you sleep. Yoga relieves stress and tension which is a common factor in sleep disorders. When your mind keeps thinking thoughts of negativity, it becomes hard to fall asleep.

Boost your energy levels. Research has shown us that when we focus on deep breathing our nervous system is stimulated to generate more energy. The combination of conscious breathing and yoga postures helps your body release toxins through sweat and triggers a release of energy that may be lying dormant in your body.

The Didi Society

The Didi Society empowers women through fair, direct trade, and educates and inspires youth to become social justice leaders. Through direct support, strong relationships and solidarity, The Didi Society helps to bring about positive change that is complete and permanent.

By marketing the handicrafts made by these women and selling them locally in Victoria and BC, we are supporting their economic independence and sustainability. Our direct relationship and the support of the network of the groups, provides the women with a sense of ownership, belonging and self-empowerment which can be a rare opportunity in the societies in which they live.

Our education program strives to educate and empower youth and young adults about the underlying issues of inequality and injustice that the women we work with face. These include workshops, conference and/or independent projects on gender equality, sustainable development, fair trade and children's rights.

The Didi Society is completely run by volunteers, and is a registered non-profit. The Yoga with Didi is an on-going, monthly fundraiser that we host to help support the education program and operational costs. Each month, a different studio and teacher, volunteers their time and space for community members to practice yoga together, while supporting the work we do to empower women and educate youth.
