MY Fest '13 - Sunday, March 24!

MY LIFE youth will host their sixth annual youth festival, MY Fest '13, Sunday, March 24, from 12 to 5 p.m., at Tempe Beach Park. MY Fest is a youth involvement festival featuring live music, entertainment, art, food, and information about resources and services from a variety of youth and family-based Valley organizations.  The annual festival is planned and produced entirely by MY LIFE youth members. This year's theme is Creating a Future Free of Bullying and Suicide.

Paving the Path Towards Health Equity for African-Americans and Others

Magellan's Cultural Competency Department invites you to its monthly brown bag presentation Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. In observance of Black History Month, this month's presentation will feature RJ Shannon, minority AIDS coordinator for the Arizona Department of Health Services BTCD, who will present, "400-50-30: Paving the Path Towards Health Equity for African-Americans and Others." RJ will provide cultural insight in working within the African-American community. The presentation will focus on understanding culture, how to effectively engage African Americans when providing HIV Prevention, and updates on CLAS and social determinants of health.

 

The presentation will take place in Magellan's Camelback Conference Room (4801 E. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85034). Please RSVP to Maria Reyes by Tuesday, Feb. 19. CEUs are available. Interpretative services available upon request.   

 

 

Learning Opportunity Focuses on Heart Health

Did you know the Magellan Learning and Performance Department offers a variety of courses that will increase your knowledge about mental and physical health?

 

In observance of American Heart Month Awareness (February), the Department is offering a free course on Coronary Artery Disease Thursday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. This informational session will help non-medical professionals define the terms 'heart disease' and 'atherosclerosis,' identify the different ranges for cholesterol and their impact on heart health as well as identify specific dietary fats that increase risk for cholesterol build-up. Participants can expect to list general risk factors for heart disease, discuss the impact of medications (particularly anti-psychotics) on metabolic and heart conditions and the need for close coordination between Psychiatric and Medical Practitioners, and form a list of points that individuals can discuss with their PCPs during appointments. Non-Title XIX Provider Fairs Continue

Fairs help SMI Learn More about Available Services

Members with serious mental illness (SMI) who are Non-Title XIX eligible are invited to learn more about the services available to them at provider fairs. Held at the adult SMI clinics throughout the month of February, members will learn how and where they can access services such as: supported employment, peer support, family support, respite care, living skills training, personal assistance, non-emergency transportation and permanent supportive housing. Youth Creative Writing and Poster Contest

In celebration of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 5 to 11) the Family Involvement Center (FIC) will host a creative writing and poster contest to raise awareness around children's mental health and help reduce stigma. The creative writing contest is open to youth ages 12 to 18, and the poster contest is open to youth ages 5 to 18. The deadline is Monday, March 11, and winners will be announced at FICs Gallery Event Wednesday, March 20. View writing contest and poster contest rules.

Arizona StandDown

The Arizona StandDown is an annual three-day event that brings together the Valley's homeless and at-risk military veterans. The goal of the event is to connect these individuals to services ranging from: VA healthcare, mental health services, clothing, meals, emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing, ID/ drivers licenses, court services and legal aide, showers and haircuts and myriad other services and resources.  Help spread the word! Connections Support Groups

NAMI Maricopa Connections Support Groups is a free, weekly, 90-minute recovery support group for people living with mental illness. The Groups provide an environment for individuals to learn from one each others experiences, share coping strategies, and offer mutual encouragement and understanding. The Groups also provide ongoing opportunities to discuss the challenges of living with mental illness and techniques for maintaining wellness. Click HERE to find a group.
