Northern Gateway Update: Geological Work Undertaken in the Douglas Channel
The work currently being undertaken in the Douglas Channel by the Geological Survey of Canada is of a similar nature to studies related to geohazard assessment that Northern Gateway Pipelines carried out to examine the potential for tsunamis as a result of submarine landslides. These studies have been submitted as evidence in the present Joint Review Panel hearings. As part of our studies of tsunamis and landslide waves, Northern Gateway employed internationally recognized experts that have studied tsunami occurrence in Douglas Channel since the early 1980's, and have worked with or been former research scientists with the Geological Survey of Canada. In fact, the current work by Natural Resources Canada to model potential tsunami events in the southern Douglas Channel is being conducted by the same tsunami numerical modeling expert that was employed by Northern Gateway.
The extensive studies by Northern Gateway spanned the period between 2005 through to 2011 since Northern Gateway recognized very early on that this form of hazard existed. We carried out the work in response to initial scoping studies that identified the previously documented submarine sliding and associated tsunamis in 1974 and 1975 that have been described and published in many public articles and scientific journals dating back to 1975. With respect to the potential fault that has been identified by NRCAN, we agree that it requires more study to determine whether movement has occurred since the end of the last ice age. Northern Gateway considers that the geological activities identified in their recent report are likely indicative of relatively old processes that occurred several thousands of years ago. |
