LARRY PINKNEY joins TPH to discuss the history of COINTELPRO and the implications of COINTELPRO today. Larry is a veteran of the Black Panther Party, activist, and former political prisoner. Larry, himself a victim of the FBI's Counterintelligence Program and he discusses the origins of COINTELPRO and the program's role in attempts to infiltrate and discredit the Black Panther Party. According to FBI documents, one of the purposes of the COINTELPRO program was to "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize the activities of the Black nationalists". They wanted to prevent the rise of a black "messiah" and Martin Luther King Jr. had been amongst the candidates until his assassination in 1968 when the attention shifted to Huey P. Newton. Of the 295 documented actions taken by COINTELPRO to disrupt Black groups, 233 were directed against the Black Panther Party.

Following are transcripts of official FBI COINTELPRO documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. The March 4, 1968 communique was sent out by J. Edgar Hoover himself just one month before the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. It specifically identified Elijah Muhammed and the Nation of Islam as primary targets of COINTELPRO, as well as Rev. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Other released FBI documents show the Bureau had infiltrators within Macolm X's Muslim Mosque, Inc. Still others prove the FBI had undercover in the very room when he was assassinated; one such agent actually administered mouth-to-mouth to the dying man. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began monitoring Martin Luther King, Jr., in December 1955, during his involvement with the Montgomery bus boycott, and engaged in covert operations against him throughout the 1960s. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was personally hostile toward King, believing that the civil rights leader was influenced by Communists. This animosity increased after April 1964, when King called the FBI ''completely ineffectual in resolving the continued mayhem and brutality inflicted upon the Negro in the deep South'' (King, 23 April 1964) He [King] could be a real contender for this position [ of 'black messiah'] should he abandon his supposed 'obedience' to 'white liberal doctrines' (non-violence) and embrace black nationalism. ...Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
