Dear Students and Parents,

The Holiday Concert set the tone for the season and displayed the arts of AISK.  There was a tangible feeling of fun mixed with determination to do well on stage.  The students showcased their talents outside of the academic arena.

Margarita Picazo, Tony Wilson, Ms. Chantal, Denise Robinson, Peter Abrikian and Betty White and our guest parent musicians - thank you for the professionalism that went into the evening event.  Students and parents departed quite proud.

Academic Calendar 2014 - 2015 is nearly complete and will be distributed in January. Placing this in parents' hands at such an early date will be helpful in setting summer holidays schedules.  AISK needs your student here everyday.

Speaking of 2014 - 2015, the following positions were recruited and contracts are signed:

ES Principal - Masters Degree

IB Math - Masters Degree

IB Physics - PhD

IB English with IB Spanish - PhD

Physical Education - Masters Degree  (Female)

EAL - Masters Degree

Math and Health - Masters Degree

Math and Science - Masters Degree

Grade 3 - Masters Degree

There will be one more recruitment fair at the end of January for the remaining 5 openings.

The schedule for 2014-2015 is nearly done.  Students will begin course selection in February for Middle and High School.  In addition, new teachers will be on Skype in June, so the students will have interaction before August; the face and name will be familiar. Due to a large graduating class and overall enrollment Pre-School - Grade 12, a reduction in the number of teachers did occur without impacting curriculum or offerings.

College Acceptances for Grade 12 have started to come in - Congratulations!

Toni-Ann Wilkens  - Barry University in Florida

Ivy Lim - Rhode Island School of Design in Rhode Island

Miranda Melhado - Rutgers University in New Jersey

December 19  - last day for Chez Max service (Canteen) to AISK.  On this day, their supply of drinks and snacks will be limited.  No regular lunch will be served, so please plan accordingly.  Be sure all credit has been paid.

On behalf of all the AISK staff, have a wonderful break and savor those moments with family and friends.  Safe travels and see you on January 6.

Sincerely,
Shirley Davis
Head of School

Dear Parents,

Grade 5 Trip to Shady Grove

Each year, the Grade Five class has partnered with the Shady Grove Basic School for our community service project. Our students at AISK are given the opportunity to give back and share our time and talent with the wonderful students and staff at Shady Grove. This year was no different.

The students were given the charge to organize a morning filled with exciting and meaningful activities. We read with students, played games, did arts and crafts and enjoyed lunch together.

Note on Homework

Homework at AISK is intended to reinforce instruction and provide additional practice to meet class and individual needs (AISK Student-Parent Handbook).  Elementary teachers are on-board with ensuring that AISK students will only have reading and on-going projects as weekend homework assignments.  Here's to the weekend... and holidays!

Attendance

Please note that at AISK, we consider student attendance to be very important.  As stated in our Student-Parent Handbook, "Parents are strongly encouraged to not excuse students from school for the purposes of extending vacations, outside activities or for minor ailments." Attendance at school and presence in class has a direct impact on student learning, and hence, absences from class can impede student achievement. Students are responsible for making up for the work missed while they are away.

Brownies Section Party

42 Brownies from Hopefield Prep. and Sts. Peter & Paul Prep. joined our AISK Brownie Pack for a fun, festive and exciting Christmas Party last Monday. This was the first of many collaborative activities planned for the Brownie Packs in District 6.

Our Pack is very proud to be leading the way in building community spirit and spreading the message of global citizenship.

The AISK Brownies were gracious hostesses and received glowing complements from their guests, as well as the parents and teachers from Hopefield and Sts. Peter & Paul.

Thank you to the parents, staff members and especially Mrs. Wallace for helping to make this venture a success.

Holiday Concert

This took place Thursday, December 12, 2013.  There were so many hard working participants to help make it an amazing contribution to the backdrop for the concert.  Many thanks to all who spent great time and effort making this AISK tradition stay alive.

Anna Thwaites-Wallace,

Elementary School Principal

Please save the date for our Winter Wonderland and watch for tickets coming home with your students in early January.

Dear Parents, Students & Staff,

Seasons Greetings to everyone.

I must first congratulate the Arts Department and students, who have received such well deserved accolades for their work in both exhibitions and our fabulous winter concert. It has been fairly quiet on the 'storm watch' front, with no action for 'The Hurricanes' this week.

On the weekend however, we hosted a well attended and successful chess tournament.

Congratulations to our budding Kasparov's:

Luke O' Brien, Top Amateur

William Van Selm, 2nd place Under 8

Emma Van Selm,  3rd Place for Top Female category
