Dear Students and Parents,

December 19 is a half day finishing at 11:30pm, and as you plan your holidays, please
refer to the school calendar.  Every day a child misses, is equivalent to two days of catch up.  This is especially true for students in Middle and High, as teachers prepare for the exams.

Parents, you are requested to be vigilant when your child packs a book-bag to come to school.  Be certain that all items in the bag are within school policy. We need your eyes at home to control any sort of attractive nuisance including items that could be harmful to students such as medicines, pocket knives, etc.

Chez Max

Chez Max will be ending their services to AISK as of December 19.  For this reason, the canteen will be unable to offer credit from this point onwards.  Parents, please pass by and pay the outstanding balances.  Please note that at this time, the school is not certain the new provider will be using the card system, so wait for further information.

Parent Coffees
These have been quite successful.  Please check the dates and mark your calendars.  If you are unable to attend, feel free to pass by any time.

This week has been quite productive at the first recruitment fair of this season being held in Atlanta, GA.  The school is attracting high caliber teachers.  Watch for a further update next week, as this fair continues until Sunday afternoon.

Sincerely,
Shirley Davis
Head of School

Dear AISK Families,

Today and for many days to come, the world mourns and will continue to mourn the loss of Nelson Mandela, Former South African President, anti-apartheid leader,  Nobel Laureate and Symbol of reconciliation.

In keeping with this, the South African Embassy will be having a book signing, open to the public in which people may come to the embassy and sign the Nelson Mandela book. This book will be mailed to the Mandela family in South Africa at a later date.

Grades 10 and 11

This week in Homeroom Grade 10 and Grade 11 students completed a session on "Procrastination".  They viewed a video to learn why people procrastinate and how this can be overcome.  Students then browsed the "Mindtools" website to determine some anti-procrastinating strategies.  The links are below for parents to view:

Grades 6, 8 and 9 Students

The students had a session looking at a  "Study Guides & Strategies" Mind Mapping device.
They selected a topic in a class that they have been studying recently and completed a Mind Mapping Exercise.  The link is below for parents to view:

With the end of Semester (January 17) and Semester Exams for Grades 8-12 (January 15-17) looming, these sites may be useful to help students plan and prepare. Please note that the Grade 7 students were with Ms. Ross at this time, discussing Community Service and will complete this task at a later date and time.

Chain of Hope

MS and HS students gave their time to support Chain of Hope at the Bustamante Hospital for Children on the Thursday of their Thanksgiving holiday.  Chain of Hope provided the food and our students served and interacted with both the children from the cardiac and the burn wards. One of the most significant things AISK students learn is that they are part of a community with responsibilities to others.  Please find some photos below:

Dear Parents,

I am hoping that everyone will had a restful and relaxing break.  Atlanta has been cold and dreary but very purposeful. The preparation for AdvanceEd, our accreditation body was right on the mark.  I would like to thank Ms. Susan Canobie, the MS/HS Principal who was the administrator in-charge on campus in my absence.

Thanksgiving

Many thanks to the PTO for the efforts put into this wonderful event.  A fun time was had by all.

 Dear Parents, Students & Staff,

HURRICANES

Two of our AISK students participated in The Pony Club Annual Dressage Show last weekend. Terrel Roberts, on Ride the Wave in the Class #2 Walk,
Trot and Rebecca Hussey, on Simpatico in the Class #3 Walk, Trot, Canter.

The show was a great success and our students were exemplary in attitude and dedication. If anyone is interested in Pony Club, contact Heidi Stollmeyer: hstollmeyer@yahoo.com

Swimming

Rhian Jones (Grade 5) represented AISK at the ASAJ PREP/PRIMARY SCHOOLS SWIM MEET, on November 30 2013, at the National Aquatic Centre. She was the only entrant from AISK. Rhian swam the girls 9-10, 50 metres backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle. Thanks to parent coach, Mr. Dennis Jones who once again stepped up to take his daughter to the meet and represent AISK.

We have secured the services of swim coach, Kafia Ripley and another fantastic parent, Mrs Ruth O'Brien, who will work together with our students to revive the AISK swim team. We have the 2014 roster and will be meeting next week to plan for the next swim meets. I have a list  of students that swim or have swum at a competitive level but feel free to let me know if you feel your child should or could swim for the AISK team. The more athletes the better and I would not want any student to miss an opportunity to be a 'Hurricane'.

If there are any other parents who would like to have involvement you would be welcome to meet with us next week. Email me at bransom@aisk.com for details.

Football

Ardenne did not show up for our boys match on Thursday, which was disappointing for all of us. Despite this, we still managed to have a good training session. Many other teams are starting to finish their involvement in various cup competition so it will hopefully be easier to arrange fixtures for our boys.

We are registering the girls for the local ISSA league and are awaiting details on that. The girls have a chance of a great run in that competition as we have only lost to Ardenne this year who reached the semi-final of last year's ISSA tournament. 2014 will be exciting!

ACTIVITIES

Week 1 of 'block b' activities launched well and sign ups grew through the week. Please remember to use our webpage to access the online sign up. This information is so valuable in tracking students for safety, communication and planning. if your browser has problems with the page, email bransom@aisk.com and I will forward you a pdf copy and the direct sign up link.

  • Taekwondo has proved a popular addition to our activities and Thursday was the more popular day but there is certainly some space for newcomers on a Monday. Other new activities of note are running, yoga, cooking, elementary boys soccer and junior MUN
  • Running is open to students, parents and teachers and is a fun way to build up your fitness levels, improve your cardiovascular system and burn off a few calories. Come and get involved!
  • Cooking is for lower elementary students who create no bake food which sounds great. Last week they made a healthy trail mix!
  • Yoga is available for students and parents at separate times. Yoga is a great way for anyone to improve flexibility, strength, posture, concentration and ability to relax. All great reasons to give it a whirl.

Please feel free to email Racquel Rhino reddvelvett@live.com for more details.

  • Junior MUN is fantastic for our middle school students to experience critical thinking and understand what it is like to make decisions that can impact the world.
  • Elementary boys soccer is being run by Mr. Dennis Jones who has already done such a great job with our elementary girls.

The Hurricanes are coming!
