Dear Parents and Students,

Due to the AASSA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, Anna Wallace, Dan Phillips and I will be away next week.  Ms. Wallace and Mr. Phillips will be in AdvancEd seminars for 3 days while I am doing appraisal and evaluation seminars.  Ms. Wallace and I will also be recruiting teachers for next academic year at the end of the conference. During the time out of school, Principal Susan Canobie, will be Officer in Charge with support from Ingrid Fitt.

Thank you PTO! The Thanksgiving celebration was nicely done, and the scarecrow in front set the scene. The students have been talking about the scarecrow since its arrival on Sunday. They have thoroughly enjoyed having "her" around, touching hay and understanding just what a scarecrow does to pass the time of day.

Thank you to Stacy Chin-Wishart for the 12' Christmas tree that was donated with lights and decorations.  Be sure to read the wishes decorating the tree.

AISK spirit surrounds us, and students are coming up with more ideas.  A quick update includes:

*The school store may soon have its own cart designed by Amir, Grade 12. This means the items will be visible and accessible.

*Grade 11 suggested more pep assemblies, so those are now in motion.

*The showers are now under construction in an area behind the dance studio.  They should    be operational by January.

*House events are being planned and may occur monthly.

*IB students are focused and a full on study week (boot camp) is set the week before    exams.

* The new canteen concessionaire will be in place for January 2014.  With that said, please     realize all students need to pay their credit to Chez Max.

*December 12 is the Winter Concert.

* The next round of after-school activities begin this coming week.  Parents, your children       should be in your hands if not involved in activity.  This is especially important for the
    elementary students.

*Lunch times on Fridays are now mini-jam sessions for elementary all the way through to   Grade 12

* A Talent Show should occur in the near future.  Please watch for further details.

AISK is a vibrant learning environment!

Sincerely,
Shirley Davis
Head of School

Dear AISK Families,

Grade 6

Mrs. Boxill's Grade 6 Social Studies class have been making Maya Headresses and having loads of fun.  Their creativity and the conversations they are having whilst doing this are inspirational.

Christmas Angels - Jamaica National Children's Home

This year High School students are running a Christmas Angels project for the JNCH.

How does this work?

Students look at the Christmas tree and choose a name of one of the residents of the home for whom they would like to buy a gift. They then write their own name and grade next to that person's name on the sign-up sheet which will have each resident's name, age and gender listed.  Gifts should be wrapped and delivered to De Ross in room 4116 no later than Friday, 13 December.

There are also some older residents - mostly disabled adults whose names will also be included.  Ideas for suitable gifts for all residents will be posted.

The sign-up sheet will be going up on Monday, 2 December.

Price limit - J$2,000

Readak

Dear AISK Parents,

There will be a  Readak Parent Seminar on Tuesday, December 3rd at 8:00am in the media center.

This seminar will cover the material your children have been learning over the past few weeks, and provide you with some pointers on ways to reinforce these skills at home.  The seminar will be approximately one hour and there will be plenty of time for questions!

I look forward to seeing you there!

Please feel free to contact me before hand by email or call at 3671-424.

Thank you!

Dear Parents,

Happy Thanksgiving!  I am hoping that everyone will have a restful and relaxing break.  I will be away from school when we return.  Ms. Davis and I will be in Atlanta, along with Mr. Dan Phillips.  We will all be attending varied portions of the AdvanceEd Latin American Conference 2013 and AASSA Recruitment Fair.  I will be available by email at awallace@aisk.com as always.  Ms. Susan Canobie, the MS/HS Principal is the administrator in-charge on campus in our absence.

ES Assembly

Our first assembly was a rewarding event where so many of our students and teachers were able to share and celebrate all that they are doing beyond the classroom. This will be a quarterly event.  We look forward to seeing even more parents in the future.

Elementary Girls Futsal by the Jamaica Independent Schools Association (JISA)

This ended up being a really fabulous event.  It was so good that I can only see the event getting better.  This was the first of an anticipated 3 rounds for this year.

Thanksgiving and Elementary Student Government Cake Raffle and Cake Walk

Many thanks to the PTO and all others who supported and were involved in the Thanksgiving Feast and activities on Wednesday.  The entire event was great for school and family spirit.  Enjoy the well-deserved break.

Note on re Fountas and Pinnell Professional Development

We were happy to have been able to host a group of four teachers from Creative Kids for the last day of our training.  This is in-line with AISK's dedication to outreach in our wider community. The teachers shared that they were truly inspired by the intervention and sharing and felt that they were ready to head right back into the classroom to delve into reading activities.

Early Childhood Literacy Morning

This will be on Friday, December 6, in the morning. Parents will be given a window into the world of Literacy Activities at AISK!  Please come out for the experience.

MAP Scores go home - Grades 3 - 5

On Friday, December 6, 2013, we will be sending the results of our first round of MAP testing home.

Holiday Concert

This event is scheduled for Thursday, December 12, 2013.  Further information to be shared shortly.

We are also hoping to add Squash and Sailing to our lists, so please look out for messages in the New Year. Feel free to send me an email to indicate interest in the interim. If there are any parents who would like to run any activities please step forward, Dennis Jones has been fantastic at coaching the Elementary girls and we would welcome further support.

    Sports Activities
This weekend saw the Elementary girls first competitive football tournament and despite facing tough opposition throughout, they did not stop fighting, demonstrating amazing determination. It was a great day, which we hope to see more of in the New Year.

The Middle and High School girls had a team fun day at Belvedere House on Saturday which was a great success. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time together and expressed their gratitude by sending Coach Patricia Ransom for a swimming lesson in the pool. We are now in the planning stage for something similar with the boys.

Inter-homeroom football matches concluded this week for grades 10, 11 & 12. The grade 10 match between 10B & 10G was extremely tight. The game finished 2-2 after extra time, going into penalties, where stunning performances from both goalkeepers denied chance after chance. It took a stunning save from Werner de Villiers to break the deadlock and secure yet another win for the Gs.

Grade 12s were so wrapped up in studying this weekend, many of them forgot their kit. This did not stop the competition from proceeding however, as grade 12s joined forces with grade 11s. This match was well supported by students and staff with lots of goals. Unfortunately for the Bs, the final score was 6-2 to the Gs. This result sealed the dominance of Gs throughout the competition and have left them 1-0 up in the inter-homeroom series of activities.

Congratulation Gs you are the Soccer Series Champions!

This however, is just the beginning of a journey of competition that can include a multitude of activities. Watch this space for the next announcement on inter-homeroom.

Below is a  table of activities that highlight what is being offered, to whom, on which days. This is a guide only and the sign up page on our website should be used for activity information and sign ups.
