Dear AISK Families,

AGM

Thank you for attending the AGM on Thursday evening.  If you were unable to attend and would like to meet this week for a recap, please give Charlotte a call.  A time will be arranged, as the information is considered important for parents.

We would also like to extend a 'thank you' to the  PTO for a wonderful reception.   Everyone who attended enjoyed the fare and the place looked stunning.  We are privileged to have parents who commit time to our school events.  Your time and energy are greatly appreciated.

Jamaica Day

On Thursday 17 October, the entire school will end our unit of learning on Jamaica with a Jamaica Day assembly.  This is an entertaining schedule of performances and will be followed by an exhibition of work in the classrooms.   The assembly will start at 10:00am and one of the scheduled items is an official 'ribbon cutting' unveiling of the art studio and solar energy system.  We urge you all to attend this special event.

Sincerely,

Shirley Davis

Dear Families of Middle/High School,

Thank you for your flexibility and patience with our recent requests to collect students early on bad weather days. We understand the disappointment of a game postponed or an activity cancelled for the day. However the most important for us is the safety of all at AISK - and that may include prompt pick up at 2:40pm. Please let us know if you did not receive the SMS message so we can tighten up this process.

You have all received a copy of your child's Mid-Quarter Progress Report. This was sent home on Thursday, September 26 via the students and you will also have received an electronic copy via email. These reports are an initial snapshot of the academic achievement of the students and may be made up of one or two assessment tasks. Please review these and I encourage you to contact teachers directly if you have concerns or questions.

Whilst teachers are available to all students during the hours of 2:35pm and 3:35pm from Monday to Thursday there may be times when they are conducting an after school activity. In addition they may be targeting specific grade levels on specific afternoons. Teachers are communicating with students about these sessions and the schedule they have arranged. Having said this, if any student needs support they would be welcome to go to a session out of their grade level.

Grade 12 students are furiously constructing applications for their academic lives beyond AISK. It is College and University Application time and this is in addition to the rigorous academic demands of their classes. Ms. Weekes is working with the students individually on their plans and for some their plans are global - the world is their oyster. We as a school, and you as parents, need to help them to focus their choices and turn thinking towards practicalities. Colleges and universities look at a student's profile in a holistic manner - this includes their Academic Transcript, Faculty Recommendations, Extra-Curricula Activities including Service Learning, SAT scores and the essay they will write. It often seems daunting to students, we need to support them through this process as a team. Please discuss this with them and if you feel uncertain of the plan, please make a point to meet with Ms. Weekes and discuss this plan. Most importantly, students need to request recommendations from their teachers at AISK. A good recommendation takes time. Students need to be asking for recommendations from two teachers, and in addition, from Ms. Weekes, as College Counselor. It is important that you know who is writing their recommendation, and more importantly, that the student has requested this from the teachers, giving them all the information they need.

It is an exciting time ahead where we have the opportunity for Grade 10-12 students to attend the TedX Jamaica talks on Saturday October 12. For more information please visit the website www.tedxjamaica.org . There is a cost of $3000 JMD with a discount of 15% for every 15 students. I am hoping we have more than this for this event - an event that promotes critical thinking, academia, curiosity and research. Please review the speakers and have a conversation with your child and determine if this would be something that would inspire and motivate their love of learning.

Our IT Director, Mrs. Watkins is working hard to get Schoology up and running and in a state where we can invite parents into this communication site.  Unfortunately there have been delays caused by the difficulty in transferring data from PowerSchool and Turnitin.  There is continuous work to solve this and once this is completed AISK aims to release an invitation to parents to log into Schoology.  In the meantime, PowerSchool and Turnitin continue to be available as usual to check student grades and for students to submit work.

Sincerely,

Susan Canobie

Dear Families of Elementary School,

Lunches and preordering

The preordering of lunches and snacks from the cafeteria permits students to maximize time available for eating and playing. We are working really hard, in collaboration with Chez Max, to ensure that the lunches, in particular, are ready on-time and delivered expeditiously. The weekly menu is sent out on the schools week ahead Constant Contact email and preordering can be done in the mornings or online by sending an email to chezmax@flowja.com.

Jamaica Studies and Jamaica Day Celebration - October 17, 2013.

Jamaican Studies in the elementary grades is specifically tied to our curriculum. The students will showcase what they have learned in their classrooms in addition to their performances in the assembly October 17, 2013 - Jamaica Day Celebration. This is a time dedicated to the celebration of learning about Jamaica.

Illnesses and Absences

Please note that emails and or phone calls about absences or illnesses of elementary students should be directed to Mrs. Seanne Williams at ext. 3388 or sewilliams@aisk.com and/or your child/ren's classroom teacher. Ms. Williams is my assistant and she is the one who manages our division's attendance. To note, all elementary staff email addresses can be found in the first few pages of the Student/Parent handbook. We continue to ask for parents cooperation with keeping sick children at home until they are well enough to return to school.

Cooperation on parking lot safety

The pick up and drop off times in the parking lot are running a lot more smoothly and safely.   As you may have noticed more sleeping policemen have been put in place and the monitoring of speed and safe exits from vehicles is an on-going priority. Thank you for your cooperation thus far and we are continuing to work on improving this standard.

Communications by Email or SMS (short message service)

With all of the rain that we had earlier this week it was prudent for the school to cancel afterschool activities. The means by which we communicate such emergency cancellations is via a SMS message. If you did not receive an SMS this week about cancellations please let us know via email. Please send the number you would like to be contacted on in such cases to sewilliams@aisk.com.

Technology

Our IT Director, Mrs. Watkins is working hard to get Schoology up and running.  Unfortunately there have been delays caused by the difficulty in transferring data from PowerSchool, our currently used school information management program.  There is continuous work to solve this and once this is completed AISK will provide instructions to parents to log into Schoology.

Please be sure to contact class teachers or me about things to celebrate, issues and concerns.

Sincerely,

Anna Thwaites-Wallace

Dear AISK Families,

Both games will be played at AISK.  Please come out and support our teams.

Dennis Valdez

One of our Grade 7 students, Dennis Valdez,  won a prize in the camp of AC Milan in Fort Lauderdale last summer.  He was chosen to participate in the American Cup (Bogota, Colombia) and AC Milan Junior Camp (Milan, Italy).  Dennis and his family will be leaving this Sunday October 6 to Bogota for his first tournament.
