December 2012
MCAS Quarterly Newsletter

Welcome to the 5th edition of the Multnomah County Animal Services quarterly e-newsletter where you'll receive updates about all the things we're doing in our unique open-door shelter.

We appreciate your support and we want to keep you in the loop about the gains we've made in caring for our community's lost, abandoned, and abused animals. We hope to use this newsletter to share our success stories and let you know how your license fees support the shelter.

This edition includes news about our "Home for the Holidays" adoption special and several happy endings at the MCAS shelter. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share it or pass it along to the other animal people in your life!

"Home for the Holidays" Adoption Special
From now until December 31st, you can take advantage of our adoption special. All pets can be adopted for just the cost of a license fee! That's $12 for cats and $25 for dogs. We'd like to see as many pets as possible find their forever homes for the holiday season.
Holiday Hours
Please note that the Multnomah County Animal Services shelter will be closed on December 25th and January 1st. The call center will be available from 10:30 am- 2 pm on on December 24th and December 31st. You may still call us at any time if an emergency arises.

MCAS would like to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!
A Happy Ending for Grover

You might remember Grover (previously known as "Pepper") from the news earlier this year.

When he was found and brought to MCAS, he was in horrible condition and was clearly a victim of severe neglect. He was placed into a foster home with one of MCAS's own employees where he was nursed back to health and well-cared for until he was adopted.

We are so happy to share some recent photos of Grover taken by his adopters. As you can see, he's well-loved and doing wonderfully.

'Tis the Season

Did you know that your kind donations to Multnomah County Animal Services are tax deductible? We offer donors the option of donating to any of four separate funds:

Forever Home Adoption Outreach Fund
This fund helps us promote and increase adoptions of shelter animals. Donations support special outreach events, adoption advertising, and grooming expenses. Donations to this fund also improve our facilities for the animals we care for at the shelter.

Dolly's Fund (Animal Care Fund)
Donations made to this fund help us provide medical care for animals in need of emergency surgeries and veterinary care before they can be placed into a new home. This fund is named in honor of our well-known, rehabilitated shelter dog "Dolly", who came into the shelter in very poor condition. Read Dolly's story here.

Shelter Dreams
This fund supports the capital campaign effort for a new facility in the city of Portland. Our current facility was built more than 40 years ago, when Portland's population was much smaller than it is today. We  have outgrown the facility and our goal is to build a new shelter in a location that is more centrally located. The new shelter will be constructed specifically with the intent of maximizing our animals' comfort and minimizing stress.

Spay/Neuter Community Outreach Fund
This fund supports spay/neuter surgeries for pets of low-income families. Spaying and neutering pets is critical in helping to reduce the population of unwanted pets in our community.

Available for Adoption: Squeaky
Hi everybody! My name is Squeaky and I'm 10 years young.  I spent some time in a foster home and boy, did they love me! I kept trying to bathe the Chihuahua, which they found endlessly amusing. And I have a squeaky meow, which everyone finds endearing.

I'm very outgoing and friendly. I'm great about using the litter box and the scratching post. I will greet you at the door every night when you come from work. I will sniff your dinner to make sure it's ok for you to eat (and maybe you'll give me a little as a reward?). Sometimes, when the moment is right, I will serenade you with a monologue of squeaks and meows. I should tell you that when I'm playing around, I can get a little carried away with the rough-housing so a home without very young children might be a better fit for me. Please see my web profile to find out where you can meet me.

Multnomah County Animal Services is constantly striving to achieve greater things for the animals in our community. We rely on the support and dedication of volunteers, foster caregivers, donors, staff and community members. We invite you to get involved today.

Sincerely,
