The Fantasticks | June 6, 7, 8 & 9 |
While the run may be short - three evening and two matinee performances starting June 6 at Daytona State College's News-Journal Center - this funny musical about love has a long success, delighting audiences since 1960.
Presented by the Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art at Daytona State, The Fantasticks is an enchanting musical with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, produced by the college's drama department.
The Fantasticks is the story of two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud. The fathers hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, ending the supposed feud. When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity.
Production dates for The Fantasticks: June 6-8, 7:30 p.m., June 8 & 9, 2:30 p.m.- all held in the Gillespy Theater in the News-Journal Center located at 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach.
