Happy Fourth of July.
Sunday June 30, 2013, HOUSTON, TX

Greetings!

Happy Fourth of July.  Since this is an opinion page I'd like to quote one of the preeminent psychologist of our time, one who leads a huge program at the University of Pennsylvania. Yes, I know it will strike some as politically incorrect but as a child of the Great Depression, the Holocaust and small farm poverty in Louisiana this reflects what I believe.

Martin Seligman - Meet Dr. Seligman
"History in the hands of the postmodernist is taught as "one damn thing after another."  I believe the postmodernists are misguided and misguiding. I believe the history is the account of human progress and that you have to be blinded by ideology not to see the reality of this progress. Balky, with fits and starts, the moral and economic envelope of recorded history is, nevertheless, upwards. As a child of the Great Depression and the Holocaust, I am clear eyed about the terrible obstacles that remain. I am clear eyed about the fragility of prosperity, and that of the billions of human beings who do not yet enjoy the flowers of human progress. But it cannot be denied that even in the twentieth century, the bloodiest of all of our centuries we defeated fascism, and communism, we learned how to feed six billion people, and we created universal education and medical care for many. We raised real purchasing power more than fivefold, we extended the life span. We began to curb pollution and made huge inroads into racial, sexual, and ethnic injustice. The age of the tyrant is coming to an end, and the age of democracy has taken firm root.
These economic military and moral victories are our proud heritage of the twentieth century.  What gift will the twenty first century pass to our posterity?"

We'd like to know what you think about contributing to the ProtonPals for regular operations or a special project. Maybe you've thought about it but were not asked. We run the operations with volunteers who covered their own expenses including mileage and parking. So if you're not a regular contributor, now I'm asking. Please take the survey and contribute if you are interested and able.

Like all things in life, nothing goes in a straight line. This idea is supported by Hofstadter's law which goes like this: "Any task you're planning to complete will always take longer than expected." So what you see above is the image we'd like to use on tee shirts and posters; only I didn't plan enough lead time to get M.D. Anderson's administrative approval for using their name on the image.

Going along in the same vein, Marcia and I decided to update our kitchen and laundry area in a house we bought new, 26 years ago. We chose a guy who could do it in the shortest time, could start on June 20th, all other things being equal - like reputation, skills and costs. Pals, I've got to say that this has impacted my ability to put much time in the newsletter because since the price was so good, I have to do a lot of the work.

We received a compliment from a highly respected source about last months newsletter and decided to put the Point/Counterpoint discussion about active surveillance on the website for future and easy access. Newly diagnosed patients may want to read this.  Read More on Our Website,

We like to broaden our contribution base and produce ProtonPals momentos and products for the things you love like custom tee shirts, cups and notes.  The image in the  header is our first pass.

In Gratitude,
Joe Landry

Lupron Legionnaire Instructs Again
Beam News Meeting
Dave Stevens gave his 13 th talk to a good sized crowd at the Beams News meeting last Wednesday June 26th.

Schedule of Upcoming Events
I've added a pop-up (I'm sure you hate them) notice on the main ProtonPals.net screen alerting you of the next Beam News meetings, Wednesday Dinners and other news. We did this as a request from patients who were coming to Houston for a follow up visit with their doctors and who would want to know about an upcoming talk or event, like Dave Stevens' regular 90 minute instructional talks. Also it will be used to notify you of the monthly talks for the prostate group at the center held on the fourth Thursday of the month.

Discussion on Active Surveillance
Captain Ly and Legionnaire Dave
The Point Counter Point article on active surveillance are now located in the ProtonPals under the tab Newly Diagnosed?

I placed the two articles there as lifted from the May newsletter to serve as a resource. We will integrate this as a "one pager," a resource that is easily available to the recently diagnosed patient.

Need A Filter?
There many comprehensive sites listing prostate cancer resources and this is a recent one funded by Genomics Health, the developer of the Oncotype DX for  prostate cancer. Resources for Finding Prostate Cancer Information and Support. It's by far the one with the most links with the list categorized as follows:
  • Education, Advocacy and Support
  • Clinical Trials Information
  • Answers from Prostate Cancer Experts
  • Blogs
  • Caregiver Support
  • Find a Local Support Group
  • Online Support Groups
A section I was particularly interested in for newly diagnosed patients is My Prostate Cancer Coach. This site must be pretty new since the Coach is still under development. If you want to get a feeling for the design then you can check out the Breast Cancer Coach and the Colon Cancer Coach.

We're a group who chose proton beam therapy to cure our cancer and were treated at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Proton Therapy Center in Houston, Texas. The "Pals" formed a network in order to:

  • Stay up to date with treatment cure results
  • Provide support to others and Center activities
  • Be informed on any side- effects
  • Promote proton radiation since it's widely regarded to have a significant advantage over conventional x-rays.
  • Attract and nurture more Pals who support our cause, patient-to-patient and friend-to-friend

  • Support ProtonPals by letting us know how you're doing. That is so important to newly diagnosed men and their wives and partners.  As a former patient we'd all welcome your help in getting the word out about proton radiation and how you're doing. Please donate using the Donate Icon below or mail a check made out to ProtonPals, Ltd.(we're a tax deductible non-profit) at my home address.  Read more about it on the website How to Help - Giving

    Sincerely,
