Happy September!
Welcome to one of my favorite months on the Island-- the tourist crowds are thinning, the water's still warm, the light is beautiful (even as the days get shorter) and it's typically great weather for sailing, biking and running... Newport Waves recently initiated their Stop. Look. Wave. campaign to improve awareness and safety for pedestrians, runners and bikers vs. cars. I think it's a great idea-- let's take it one step further and add a smile. I'll wave and smile if I see you, hope you will wave back!

TODAY! Craft your own waterproof fake shark fin in honor of the 40th anniversary of "Jaws" and join Clean Ocean Access for a splash mob at Easton's Beach from 5pm-6pm. Help with a short beach cleanup first, (supplies provided) then show your teeth in a group photo to raise awareness about protecting water quality and our shorelines from pollution. Photo will take place at approximately 5:40pm.

run along
Running season ramps up this month-- just a few of several local races include the Harvest Wine Run (Middletown) on 9/13, the Jamestown Half-Marathon on 9/19, the Summer's End PBA 5K (Portsmouth) on 9/26 and the Run for the Fallen 5K (Bristol) also on 9/26. At StarRide 15 on 9/13 there is something for every age and ability to enjoy-- bike, run or walk any of six scenic routes around Ocean Drive (3, 7,12, 25 , 35 & 45 miles) -- you choose. (Hopefully, I'll be off of the bench and able to run along myself next month!)

One upside to earlier sunsets is more opportunities for outdoor film screenings. This month newportFILM Outdoors features Tiger Tiger at the Norman Bird Sanctuary on 9/3 and The Mask You Live In at Great Friends Meeting House Lawn on 9/10. The Sandlot will be screened at Cardines Field on 9/4 and The Golden Door, presented by Festa Italiana will be shown at the Newport Public Library on 9/29.

look up
On 9/28, the "Super Moon" will look larger and brighter than usual due to its close approach to Earth. This Harvest Super Moon coincides with a total lunar eclipse as it passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and take on a rusty or blood red color, also known as the Super Blood Moon.
