march 2014

Theoretically...

Spring is just 19 days away with the Vernal Equinox on 3/20. Perhaps the days ahead will feel more spring-y when we wind the clock hands forward on 3/9? Let's hope so! In the meantime, we are lucky to have a full slate of music and events this month to keep up our spirits as we watch for the popping of daffodils and prepare for Newport's 58th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on 3/15. Take some time to enjoy... and hang in there, winter can't last forever, can it?

Best,

Johnny A Common Fence Music features the legendary Peter Yarrow tonight (3/1) at Channing Church (thanks for the head's up Mom ;-) CFM also features the Sweetback Sisters on 3/8 and Poor Old Shine on 3/29.   There are too many great concerts to list at the Narrow's Center for the Arts this month, but among them are Tinsley Ellis on 3/2, Royal Southern Brotherhood on 3/13 and Matt Schofield on 3/15. Johnny A Carolina Chocolate Dropsplays on the Ides of March (3/21), The Melodic performs on 3/30 and the month goes out with a bang and the Carolina Chocolate Drops on 3/31. Special events include the Narrows Blues Brunch with Matt Stubbs Blues Band on 3/23, and the Girls, Guns & Glory with Sara Borges CD Release Party on 3/28. Norey's on Broadway has transformed into a fine live music venue. Sara Borges Their Wednesday night series features Lisa Mills on 3/5, the James Montgomery Band with Duke Robillard on 3/12 and Dynamite Johnny on 3/26.
If your in a Celtic music mood, the Newport Public Library's Sunday Concert Series features Aubrey Atwater on 3/30. And isn't this
the perfect time of year to pull up a pint by the potbelly stove and enjoy a traditional  Irish Session at the Fastnet Pub with the South Coast Rovers on a Sunday afternoon?

Pretend to be Irish Newport Irish Heritage hosts numerous events this month highlighted by 58th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and 8th Annual Family Celebration on 3/15, rain or shine.

For my running friends, the Tour de Patrick includes three road races, you can choose to run just one or run 'em all. The Irish 5K starts at 11am this morning (3/1) in Pawtucket (better get a move on!), the St. Pat's 5K is held in Providence on 3/8, prior to Providence St. Patrick's Day parade and the Guiness Celtic 5K is on 3/9. Visit the Tour de Patrick website for more information and registration.

American Hustle
You can celebrate the Oscars at the Jane Picken's Theater on Sunday evening (3/2), starting with red carpet arrivals followed by the big show on the big screen! Gather with your neighbors to watch while enjoying appetizers, desserts and a cash bar. Attire is as glamorous or as casual as you like, admission is just $15. JPT has many fine films in rotation this month including Gloria and American Hustle through 3/6 and Invisible Woman starting on 3/7 to name a few. Are you (like me) Missing Downton Abbey yet? Perhaps you'll find consolation in a British Dessert Tasting and the Season 2 Premiere of Mr. Selfridge on 3/30?
