Broncos Recognized by Ga. Tech for Creating Educational Games for Haitian Students
Brookwood computer programming students participated in the Georgia Tech Scratch Competition. The competition challenged students to create educational games for students in Haiti to learn math, typing and English. Many of our students spent hours outside of class creating their applications for this competition. Scratch is a drag and drop programming language where students can create animations and games. Brookwood submitted 10 student entries into the competition. The following students won awards in these categories.

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL DEBBIE DEES
Greetings!
Teaching techniques have come a long way from lectures at the chalkboard. This month, while the students enjoyed an extended lunch, I sat in on one of our staff's Lunch-n-Learn sessions. The topic on this particular day was creating online tutorials. One of our fellow Brookwood educators shared her method that uses free apps to turn a teacher's computer or tablet into a recordable whiteboard. The teacher can use these devices to record lessons or review material. Engaging lessons or reviews might include songs, images, text or animation. Students can replay the tutorials at home on their own time and catch up on missed lessons when absent. This type of learning can even help the student who might be too shy to ask a question or ask for extra help.
Lunch-n-Learn is just one way that Brookwood staff keeps current and collaborates on teaching resources and technology available for classroom use. Studies show that, across all disciplines and levels of achievement, students benefit from technology use, from high achievers to those with behavioral and emotional issues.
I still believe that a good teacher can connect with students without the latest gadget. But, I'm also confident that the Classes of 2013-16 will leave Brookwood able to gather the information they need from multiple sources. As a staff, we will continue to learn from each other's successes and adapt teaching techniques to best reach today's students.
Warmly,
Debbie |

FBLA Members Attend Leadership Conference in Athens
Three members of Brookwood's Future Business Leaders of America Club attended the FBLA Fall Leadership Conference in Athens last month. At the conference, students learned about entrepreneurship, community service and public speaking. They also had the opportunity to attend open sessions of their choice, including "You go girl", that taught females how to survive in the business world, and "You da man", which helped young men with business etiquette. Other sessions helped students understand the importance of the personal image presented on social media. These students are on their way to becoming the leaders of tomorrow. |

Student Art Selected for Symposium & Exhibition
 |
This piece by sophomore Brian Bradley will be on display at City Hall through Dec. 30. |
Visual Art students sent work to the annual Georgia Ceramics Symposium in Newman. It is a juried show and is open to all high school students in the state. Eleven Brookwood students submitted work and seven were accepted into the show. In addition, two students, Abby Summers and Alexis Jacob, had their portfolio submissions accepted (portfolio = minimum of 5 ceramic works). We congratulate the following students for their success: Abby Summers, Alexis Jacob, Ashley Jacob, Dayana Morales, Haley Peacock, Danielle Ramos and Sally Seo.
In addition, the Visual Art Department will exhibit student art in the Community Room of Snellville City Hall. This is the first showing of this kind in City Hall, but the City of Snellville expects that these exhibitions will be ongoing and open to high school students in the Snellville area. Student artwork from Brookwood will be on display from December 4-30. The opening reception is December 4, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Both the exhibition and the opening reception are open to the public.
