"The Wyeth Cambridge" Renovation Project Receives Prestigious ABC Residential Construction Award

Abbot Key Member of Construction Team

Abbot is proud to announce that Delphi Construction (Waltham, MA) has received the prestigious Eagle and Green Award for Residential Construction by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. of Massachusetts. As a key member of the construction team, Abbot performed extensive masonry restoration of the building facades. The award was presented at the 22nd Annual Excellence in Construction Awards dinner, which honors the best work performed by the more than 400 members of the construction trade group.

The Wyeth Cambridge was previously home to The Saint John School, an essential piece of North Cambridge life for over 100 years. After nearly a decade of neglect, Broder Properties LLC (Boston, MA), a local real estate developer, undertook a 2-year project to convert the properties into a beautifully landscaped 63-unit luxury residential campus.

The scope of Abbot's work included cleaning of the brick, repointing of the brick joints, and caulking the windows and doors after installation. Significantly, Abbot had new pre-cast stones fabricated to match the original stones in color and texture, and researched and located a new brick that matched the original brick.

The awards dinner was held on November 19, 2014 in the Granite Links Ballroom in Quincy, MA. WHDH television political reporter, Andy Hiller, emceed the event. Award winners were selected by an independent panel of judges, each a leader in the Architect/Engineer/Contractor industry. Sixteen companies were honored in a variety of categories.

"These projects represent state-of-the-art in construction," said ABC Massachusetts president Greg Beeman. "The companies should be justifiably proud of their achievements. Work of this caliber is helping to raise the standards of excellence throughout the construction industry."

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national construction industry trade association representing nearly 21,000 chapter members. Founded on the merit shop philosophy, ABC and its 70 chapters help members develop people, win work and deliver that work safely, ethically, profitably, and for the betterment of the communities in which ABC and its members work.

Responsible Maintenance Practices

The harsh winter weather is certainly a wake-up call to all building owners and managers that responsible maintenance practices are essential in preserving the integrity of masonry structures.

A proven maintenance strategy is comprised of a combination of thorough periodic inspections, and well-designed and well-implemented repairs. This includes a visual inspection of a masonry building every year or two to check for obvious signs of deterioration.

Should there be evidence of masonry damage, the first and most important step in the repair process is to identify and correct the cause of the damage. It is essential to solve the problem that caused the damage before the repair is made. Otherwise, the problem can surface again.

Remedial actions should be evaluated by priority and urgency. Safety issues, such as loose and crumbling masonry, should be addressed immediately. Repair or replacement of deteriorated elements, treatment of potential problem areas, and routine maintenance should be prioritized based on budgetary and scheduling considerations.

Knowledgeable contractors using quality materials can safeguard an owner's investment, preserve the appearance of the structure, and potentially add to its value. As a service to our clients, Abbot provides comprehensive inspections of the exterior building facade, foundation, and roof. Call us at 617-445-0274
