Pastor's Weekly Message

"Prayer Is Not Enough"

Our hearts are heavy again, as a nation, as we mourn the senseless gun massacre of nine persons and injury of several others at a community college this past Thursday in Oregon.  Our prayers are with the victims, the families and the entire community in the wake of this tragedy.

The shooting highlights the fact that gun violence in our nation is simply out of control.  In fact, this shooting marked the 294th death or injury from a shooting involving four or more people in the United States this year - a rate of more than one victim a day.  President Barack Obama rightly noted in a speech following the incident, that gun violence and mass shootings have become too routine, and that we must pray about the situation, but that prayers are not enough (Click here for President Obama's complete statement).

I agree with President Obama that we must do more than pray. Don't get me wrong, prayer is key, but we must also couple our prayers with action.  Indeed, the Bible says "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:17).  This means that we must pray, but we've also got to act, and now is the time for us to demand that our federal lawmakers pass gun legislation. Now is the time for us to take on the gun lobby and other special interests that hold our lawmakers hostage from doing what's right to protect our nation from the scourge of guns.

Most importantly, in the wake of this tragedy and countless others like it, God is calling us as people of faith to rise up and to do more to spread the love of Jesus Christ.  The young man who committed this senseless act of violence was hurting and needed the love of Jesus.

We must ask ourselves individually and collectively as people of faith, what are we doing to spread the love of Christ?  What are we doing on a daily basis? We must ask these questions, we must pray and then we must act because Jesus truly is the answer for the world today.

Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Kip Banks, Sr.
