SECURING OUR FUTURE
///FROM THE
PRESIDENT'S DESK

"Experiencing Resurrection"

Resurrection Sunday is the story of a great discovery - the discovery that Christ lives.  But not only does Christ live, he triumphs!  He rose triumphantly from the grave.  There is no grave deep enough to hold Jesus.  There is no seal strong enough to keep him back - 2000 years ago and even today.

Jesus' disciples, like many of us today, were troubled.  They thought that all hope was gone.   The world was dark and they were lonely.  But when a few of the women decided to look for Jesus anyhow, they heard the glorious news - "he is not here; he is risen."

We too can share in the joy of the risen Christ in this dark hour if we would only seek His face. We must look for Jesus like the women disciples -- no matter what adverse conditions and circumstances face us.   We must seek His face through prayer, praise and worship, acts of thanksgiving, kindness and Christian service.

This month, we also commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was martyred 46 years ago in Memphis, TN. I am pleased that PNBC is experiencing resurrection as we continue Dr. King's work for social justice and the realization of universal human rights and total human liberation for all people.

We are advocating against state Stand Your Ground Laws, supporting increases in the minimum wage and efforts to curb climate change.  We are also working to rebuild lives and churches devastated by the recent typhoon in the Philippines. In a few weeks, I will be going to ground zero to be with the leaders -- at their request - as we assist with rebuilding efforts. Jesus is alive, and because He is alive we too can experience resurrection.

The songwriter said it best when he said, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, because He lives all fear is gone, and life is just the worth the living because he lives!"

PROGRESSIVE NEWS

PNBC's Rev. Michael Wortham Closes The Gospel and Hip Hop Gap in Atlanta, GA.

The Hymns & Hip Hop ConferenceTM (H3C) is a three-day symposium that was held March 28-30, 2014 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in an effort to bridge the cultural and intergenerational gaps between what is easily the two most influential spheres in our community--the church and Hip Hop.

Consisting of old school and new school Hip Hop and Gospel artists such as Kool Mo Dee and YaNI, clergy and scholars such as Rev. Dr. Valerie Bridgeman and Minister Server Tavares of KRS-One's Hip Hop Temple, H3C featured panel discussions, workshops, a town hall summit, cross-platform opportunities for collaboration, an artist lounge, a Hymns & Hip Hop Concert featuring gospel recording artist Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music, a neighborhood community block party, and culminated with a Hymns & Hip Hop themed Youth Day Sunday worship service.

While H3C does not presume to be able to address or solve all of the points of contention between the Hip Hop and church communities, the goal is to begin to dispel the many myths and misunderstandings about both communities to find and establish a common ground on which both can work side by side with love.

"Gospel and Hip Hop have become very commercialized, and have left their intended purpose, and we need to get back to it," Rev. Michael Wortham said during an on-camera interview.

"The Black Church & Climate Change"
                 by
   Pastor Kip Banks, Sr.

Dr. King was a drum major for social justice and especially on behalf of the poor.

Dr. King once said "As long as there is poverty in the world, I can never be rich, even if I have a billion dollars. "

Dr. King's voice speaks to us today and it says that the United States of America will never be all that it can be until we address the concerns of the poor and this is one of the major reasons why the Black Church should be concerned about Climate Change and mark Earth Day which is this Tuesday, April 22.

We are concerned about climate change because of its detrimental impact on the environment and our biblical moral imperative to be stewards of God's creation.  However, we are also concerned about climate change because of our mandate to take care of the least of our brothers and sisters.

A Tribute to

 Dr. A. Louis Patterson Jr.

by

Dr. Keith Woods

My heart was saddened last Wednesday, April 9, 2014, when I received the news that one of my all-time favorite preachers, the Rev. Dr. A. Louis Patterson Jr., long-time Pastor of the Mount Corinth Baptist Church of Houston, TX, had gone home to be with the Lord.

Patterson was one of the world's greatest preachers and teachers of God's Word, who was appreciated, respected, revered, and sought after across ethnic and denominational lines.

"THE LORD'S WONDERFUL LOVE"

In Psalm, 103, God reveals His wonderful love for us.  God forgives us for our sin

and protects us from death.

Indeed, His kindness and love is a crown on our heads.

For every day that we live, God provides us with our every need and renews our strength like a young eagle.

The Lord is merciful, kind and patient.  His love never fails.

How great is

God's love for all of us who worship Him.

Just as parents are kind to their children,

so is God kind to those who worship him.  Indeed, as our praises go up to God, He showers us with blessings in return.

As a result of God's wonderful love for you and I,

we should continue to bless and praise His holy name.

"Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me,

bless his holy name"  (Psalm 103:1)
