Tough Guise 2 Screening
Thursday, November 6, 2014

This documentary, by Dr. Jackson Katz, addresses societal pressures, expectations and media skewed views of gender stereotypes. It ties in the history of how men and boys have been portrayed in movies and on T.V. with current examples of video games and contemporary films. It also examines the language we use to describe what it means to be "a man" and how semantics feed into the perpetuating of stereotypes.

Screening - 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Community discussion with the filmmaker - 8:00-9:00 p.m.

The film is not recommended for children under 13 (parental discretion is advised - some profanity and graphic imagery).

This event is sponsored by the City of South Pasadena, South Pasadena High School and South Pasadena's Police Officers' Association with special thanks to Healthy South Pasadena, South Pasadena High School PTSA, The Place and Moms for Community.

Public Works Commission to Consider Speed Limit Changes to Three Street Segments
Wednesday, November 12, 2014
Map of Proposed Speed Limit Zones
A Map of the Proposed Speed Limit Zones based upon the
Citywide Engineering & Traffic Survey (E&TS)

The City of South Pasadena Public Works Commission will be considering the recommendations of the 2014 Engineering & Traffic Survey (E&TS) at its regular meeting on Wednesday November 12, 2014, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 1424 Mission Street. E&TS are required by the State of California to establish intermediate speed limits on local streets and to enforce those limits using radar or other speed measuring devices.

The 2014 E&TS studied all 29 of the City's collector and arterial streets, divided into 58 segments. The study recommends recommends speed limit changes on three segments:

  • Fair Oaks Avenue, from Monterey Road to Oak Street
  • Fremont Avenue, from Columbia Street to SR 110 Freeway
  • Marmion Way, from the west City limit to Pasadena Avenue
Interested members of the public are invited to provide their comments on the E&TS at the Public Works Commission meeting. The Commission is an advisory body, so no final decision will be made at the Commission meeting. The Commission's recommendations will be forwarded to the City Council for formal action. For more information go to www.southpasadenaca.gov or visit the Public Works office at City Hall, 1414 Mission Street.

Picture of a toilet bowl full of Dollar Bills

The City of South Pasadena recently increased the rebate for a high efficiency toilet to $200 per toilet! These 1.28 gallon per flush toilets can save about 13,000 gallons of water a year for a typical family! To make sure the toilet you like is eligible for the rebate, visit SoCalWaterSmart.com This is the same website to redeem your rebate.

Warning - In our neighboring cities, companies have called residents or knocked on doors stating the City mandates they upgrade toilets or other devices. This is not true, so please beware!

If you have concerns or questions about a company or our programs, please contact Debby Figoni, the City's water conservation expert, at (626) 403-7311 or dfigoni@southpasadenaca.gov

South Pasadena's Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project
Diagram displaying how a slipline places a lining inside old, worn out pipe to prevent sewer leakage.

The City of South Pasadena Public Works Department recently started a ten month major upgrade project to the City's almost century old sewer system. Around the City, 230 segments of the sewer system will be rehabilitated or replaced. About 90% of the upgrades will utilize trenchless technology of a cured in place plastic (CIPP) lining, and 10% will be repaired via open trench work. CIPP liners enter the sewer pipe through an existing manhole as a soft lining, and with heat are cured into a hard, durable, protective pipe liner.

Residents are encouraged to keep their eyes open for door hangers that will be placed at their homes one week, as well as 24 hours, before construction starts in their neighborhoods. To see a map of where construction will be taking place around town and learn more about the project, visit the project page at www.southpasadenaca.gov/sewerproject

Valley Construction Management has been retained by the City to provide full-time inspection and construction management services for the project. Any concerns or questions should be directed to the Project Inspector at (760) 201-3497.
Thankful Conservation Ideas for Thanksgiving!
Picture of a jack-o-lantern asking to be composted.

This Thanksgiving, be thankful for our earth's precious resources by practicing these easy conservation ideas:

  • Don't do dishes by hand, instead run full loads of dishes which only uses 4 gallons of water.
  • Don't overload your garbage disposal or your sewer system with grease and food waste. Instead, place in garbage or compost.
  • Remember your reusable bags when shopping (pick up a free bag at City Hall).
  • Save energy by lowering your thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter.
  • Plant a tree with the family that will remind you annually of how thankful you are for clean air.
For more ideas, visit southpasadenaca.gov or call (626) 403-7311.
