The Right Reverend Pierre W. Whalon, Bishop in Charge

The Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe

Episcopal Church USA within the Anglican Communion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As more abductions of schoolgirls occurred today, May 7, in Nigeria, I call upon our congregations in Europe and all people of good faith to pray for the recovery safe and sound of all these children, for their families who are suffering terribly, and for the leaders of Nigeria and the world to act swiftly and effectively to secure their rapid return home.

While Mother's Day in Nigeria is not this Sunday, it will be celebrated in several of our countries. As we remember our own mothers, we must also have in mind the hundreds of mothers who cannot eat or sleep wondering where their daughters are, how they are, what are they suffering, and when will they get their girls back. Not to mention the girls' fathers, siblings, and extended families.

Jesus commanded us to pray for our enemies, as well. So we need to pray for all the members of the Boko Haram, that they will turn from their evil, and that justice be done for all.

While we are praying, we should also act. I urge you to get informed through the media. Social media are using "#BringBackOurGirls". Then consider writing your governments, the President of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan, and UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, demanding action. If there is a demonstration in your city, consider joining it.

In Christ,

Bishop Pierre Whalon

Possible prayer to use:

O God, when your Son Jesus came in great weakness to be one of us, an evil leader put children to death, deeply grieving your heart. We pray that in your compassion and love, you will empower those whose responsibility it is to bring home the girls kidnapped in Nigeria, and move those who kidnapped them, so that all might return safe and sound. We also pray for the families who are waiting in desperation. We ask this in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
