The Man Who Knew Too Much

Where & When
Date: Wednesday, May 8
Time: 20:00
Location: British Institute, Lungarno Guicciardini 9
Score by Bernard Herrmann

As part of the ongoing "Talking Pictures" series, the British Institute will hold a screening of the film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956) with James Stewart, Doris Day, and Brenda de Banzie, on Wednesday, May 8, at 8:00 PM, in the Sala Fiamma Ferragamo, Harold Acton Library.

Herrmann's collaboration with Hitchcock continued with his score for Hitchcock's remake of his 1934 thriller of the same name. With its climax at a performance in the Royal Albert Hall which masks an assassination attempt, who better to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra than Herrmann himself? The score carries the mounting suspense in wordless sequences that give prominence to Herrmann the conductor as well as Herrmann the composer (much of the score was based on Arthur Benjamin's score for the original film). And since the star was Doris Day, Hitchcock wanted a song (not by Herrmann, but against much criticism, endorsed by him) resulting in the immortal "Que Será Será."

Iris Garden Aperitivo

Where & When
Date: Saturday, May 11
Time: 17:00
Location: Iris Garden next to Piazzale Michelangelo
Sponsored by the Associazione Tumori Toscana

The ATT (Assoc. Tumori Toscana) will be hosting an aperitivo in the Iris Garden (under the walls on the right side of the Michelangelo Piazza) on Saturday, May 11 at 5:00 PM, and will be offering guided tours of the garden.

All donations will go to ATT and the Garden as both are in need of public support and the Irises will be in full bloom!

The garden was founded in 1954 and the first competition was held in 1957. It is the only garden in the world where amateur and professional Iris breaders can exhibit their original creations and compete with other breeders from around the world. The scope was to encourage them to create a real red iris the color of the "Giglio" of Firenze.

The garden is open from April 25 to May 20, but the period of the ATT Aperitivo and the week of Judging are the peak period. It is open from from 3:30 PM to 7 PM every day.
