Celebrating the Life of One of Florence's Great Expats
Presented by St. Mark's Cultural Association, and curated by Dott.ssa Tiziana Masucci.
April 21 - May 4
Born in London in 1894 to Alice Keppel, Violet Trefusis became a prominent figure among the Europe elite. She was known as a writer, a bon viveur, traveler, and philanthropist. She was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1950 (for her war-time radio broadcasts), the Médaille d'Argent de la Ville de Paris in 1953, and Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana in 1960 (for her activity as a writer and her love of Italy).
"Violet in Florence" at St Mark's Church will encompass many aspects of her career and life, including: an exhibition offering a rare glimpse of Violet's most prized possessions; an Anglo-Italian reading of her book, I Pagagalli sull'Arno; operatic concerts of her favorite arias; 'Hello Violet,' an entertaining and witty musical of her life; guided tours of Bellosguardo and Florence inspired by Violet's favorite haunts; and last but not least, a roaring 1920's inspired party.
The festival will run from the April 21-28, with the exhibition running until the May 4. For further information see: www.facebook.com/stmarksitaly.

Score by Bernard Herrmann
As part of the ongoing "Talking Pictures" series, the British Institute will hold a screening of the film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956) with James Stewart, Doris Day, and Brenda de Banzie, on Wednesday, May 8, at 8:00 PM, in the Sala Fiamma Ferragamo, Harold Acton Library.
Herrmann's collaboration with Hitchcock continued with his score for Hitchcock's remake of his 1934 thriller of the same name. With its climax at a performance in the Royal Albert Hall which masks an assassination attempt, who better to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra than Herrmann himself? The score carries the mounting suspense in wordless sequences that give prominence to Herrmann the conductor as well as Herrmann the composer (much of the score was based on Arthur Benjamin's score for the original film). And since the star was Doris Day, Hitchcock wanted a song (not by Herrmann, but against much criticism, endorsed by him) resulting in the immortal "Que Será Será."
There will be no showing on May 1.
