"Lost Girls:  Sex and Death in Renaissance Florence

Nicholas Terpstra, Professor of History at the University of Toronto, will present the topic of "Lost Girls:  Sex and Death in Renaissance Florence" at the Adult Forum this coming Sunday, April 21.

Come and retrace the steps of an investigation into the most unique orphanage in Renaissance Florence, and the puzzling question of why so many girls died there. The Casa della Piet (House of Compassion) opened just around the corner and down the street from St. Jame's on Borgo Ognissanti in 1554, and hundreds of the poorest girls in Florence were sheltered there. Why did so few survive?

Grab a cappuccino and join us in the Undercroft at 10:00 AM.

"Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices That, if I then had waked after long sleep, Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming, The clouds methought would open and show riches Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked, I cried to dream again." Caliban III, ii
