Wednesdays in Lent

Book Study - In the House of the Lord

 

Each Wednesday in Lent there will be a Book Study at  7:30 PM at the Rectory. We will be reading and discussing Henri Nouwen's In the House of the Lord. Books will be provided and everyone is welcome. Last meeting: March 20. See you there!

On Thursdays during Lent there will be a FREE DINNER at 7:30 PM followed by Compline. Various groups in the parish will be sponsoring and preparing dinner.

Italian Cooking Lessons

St. James Fundraiser

 

As a main fundraising event for the Church, St. James will be offering a series of four cooking lessons in April, featuring the cuisine of the various regions of Italy. Renowned Florentine chef Maria Paola Giannone (http://www.paolagiannonechef.com) will conduct the lessons in Italian, but her assistant chef, St. James' Antonietta Ferraioli, will be available to translate. Following each lesson, participants will enjoy the fruits of their labor with a scrumptious three course meal, drinks included.

 

The lessons will be on Wednesdays, April 3, 10, 17, and 24 beginning at 6:30 PM.

 

The minimum donation to participate in all is €110, or €30 per class.

Last Saturday St. James hosted a workshop entitled "Saving God's Children," led by child protection trainer, The  Rev. Jana Johnsen.

The workshop was well-attended and very productive. A big thanks to The Rev. Johnsen and all participants. Educational material from the workshop is available in the Church office.

Every Sunday in Church, the St. James Foodbank is collecting donations of food. Please support this important ministry by donating any of the following items: canned tomatoes, canned beans, 1 liter packages of long shelf life milk, 500 gram packages of pasta, 1 kilo packages of rice, 80 gram and 160 gram cans of tuna, coffee, crackers, small boxes of juice, merendine.  

 

The shopping cart will be at the back of the Church, waiting to be filled!

It is a spacious 3-bedroom, 3-bath apartment, furnished with antiques, including a beautiful 1826 John Broadwood fortepiano, and overlooking the church and the rectory garden. It is fully equipped with linens for both bed and bath, along with kitchen supplies. There is satellite television that includes many English language programs, a washing machine, microwave oven, and iron. The bedrooms and living room are air conditioned. Off- street parking within the grounds of the church for one car.

The effect of Sergei Diaghilev's Russian ballet on the dance paintings of Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is the subject of another beautifully illustrated talk by John Hoenig, who has previously spoken on Buontalenti and on the Florentine orgins of opera.

Talking Pictures at the British Institute - Zeffirelli Series

 

The British Institute of Florence will have a showing of Franco Zeffirelli's "Tea with Mussolini," on Wednesday, March 13, at 8:00 PM.

This is the tenth and last screening in the Institute's Talking Pictures - Franco Zeffierelli series.

The film will be shown  in the Sala Fiamma Ferragamo at the Harold Acton Library, followed by an end of season party.
