Lunch following the Meeting
 

St. Mark's English Church has challenged St. James Church to a "Pancake Race" following a pancake luncheon at Noon in the lobby of St. Mark's Church, Via Maggio 16-18. The race will be at Piazza Santo Spirito at 1:00 PM. The Rector of St. James will captain our team. We are looking for members for a St. James Church team. Please contact the Church office and lead us to victory. The prize for winners will be awarded in heaven.

The Season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 13, 2013. 

 

Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes will be at 7:30 PM.

 

On Thursdays during Lent there will be a dinner at 7:30 PM (€5, kids free) followed by Compline. Various groups in the parish will be sponsoring and preparing dinner.

In our daily life we are often confronted with the reality that it can be difficult to live a spiritual life. In the business of our homes, at the workplace, or when shopping; how can we liberate ourselves from the many distractions which surround us and continue to live a spiritual life in the midst of today's troubles?

 

Weekend Retreat: March 1-3, 2013

Location: The Guesthouse of the Missionsbenediktinerinnen, Bahnhofstr. 3, 82327 Tutzing is easily reachable from Munich, Germany by a local train. It is located almost directly at Lake Starnberg.

 

Duration: The retreat will begin with dinner at 18:00 on Friday March 1, 2012, and end with lunch on Sunday March 3, 2012 at 12:30.

 

Costs: Participants pay for their own travel and accommodations. Costs for room and full board are €94 in a single room, €86 in a double room.

The Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe has a program in place to train vestries , parish staffs, and all workers with children and youth about appropriate and professional behavior. The Rev. Jana Johnsen of Wisbaden, Germany, a professional trainer in this field, will lead an all day workshop to educate and inform us of policies and procedures. Everyone is invited to attend. Last Friday St. James Church hosted the closing evening of Florence's annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Seventy people were in attendance and dinner was prepared for our guests. Special thanks to Jocelyn Fitzgerald, who cooked all the food, and to her helpful team members: Antonietta Ferraioli, Telson Bage, Sally Cook, Marianna Perra, Barbara Maraventano, and Tina Cararri.

We are in the process of updating the Church Directory. The list of names and addresses we currently have will be at the back of the Church through next Sunday, February 3. Please take a moment to check and update your information.  If you are not on the list and wish to be included in the Directory, please add yourself - name, address, telephone, email. PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY. If you  prefer, call or email the Church office with your information. Finally, if you definitely know that someone on the list is no longer part of the St. James community, please let inform the office. 

Volunteers are needed to help with folding bulletins. A small time commitment would make a big difference! If interested, please contact the Church office.

 

 

The British Institute of Florence will have a showing of Franco Zeffirelli's "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" on Wednesday, January 30, at 8:00 PM.

This is the third film to be shown during the Institute's Talking Pictures - Franco Zeffierelli series, shown each Wednesday through March 20 in the Sala Fiamma Ferragamo at the Harold Acton Library.

 

On February 14th, The Global Theatre Project's Creative Campus program in collaboration with the Comune di Firenze, the US Consulate and the Robert Kennedy Foundation will organize a flash mob in Piazza Repubblica. This event will be part of a global movement on that day to bring attention to the growing issue of violence against women and girls. Over 180 countries and 13,000 organizations will participate. We are proud to add Florence to that list.

 

Girls and boys, men and women of all ages are invited. Let us fill Piazza Repubblica to its fullest capacity!!!

The event will begin exactly at 15.00 and last no more than 20 minutes.

 

We are asking for everyone to bring a donation, of any size, which will be collected by Associazione Artemisia for their work helping victims of violence.

 

We are asking everyone to wear black and red and/or pink.

 

If you represent a group... we would love you to bring a sign which says, in ANY language, 'XXX says STOP THE VIOLENCE' or, if you are an individual, to create your own
