A Franciscan Legacy: Benozzo Gozzoli's Frescoes in the Choir Chapel of San Francesco in Montefalco
Shannon Emily Gilmore, M.A. in Italian Renaissance Art History from Syracuse University in Florence, will discuss the frescoes in the Choir Chapel of San Francesco in in the Umbrian town of Montefalco, depicting the Life of St. Francis. The frescoes were painted by Benozzo Gozzoli from 1450 to 1452, a period in which the rivalry between two competing Franciscan factions, the Observants and the Conventuals, was at its height in Montefalco.
Ms. Gilmore argues that the decorative program was aimed at reinserting the small-town Conventual friars into the larger Franciscan legacy, thus providing the friars with a renewed sense of authority and legitimacy, which was necessary in light of the overpowering presence of the Observants.
