The Adult Forum resumes this Sunday with a talk by art and fashion historian Sara Piccolo Paci. Ms. Paci teaches courses on the History of Art, Costume, and Fashion and Cultural Anthropology at the Fashion Institute of Technology of New York, New York University, and Kent University. Her research focuses on the interaction between the body and society over the centuries, and costumes and fashion as an expression of human needs in relation to religion, politics, economy, identity, anthropology, technology, etc. She is a regular contributor to national and international fashion and art magazines, and the author of Le Vesti del Peccato - Eve, Salomè and Mary Magdalene in Medieval Art, History of Liturgical Garments - Form, Function, and Meaning, and S. Maria a Fagna, storia di una pieve e di una comunità.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity this year is January 18-25. Churches of various denominations in Florence will take turns hosting seminars and worship. St. James will host the gathering on Friday, January 25 at 6:00 PM, with a meeting entitled "Walking Together in Celebration." This will be followed by a simple supper (€5 per person).

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2013 immediately following the 11:00 AM Parish Eucharist. The various ministries will present their reports and new Vestry members will be elected. If you or anyone you know would like to be nominated for the Vestry, please contact the Church.

A free lunch in the Undercroft will follow the meeting.

Every Sunday in Church, the St. James Foodbank is collecting donations of food. Please support this important ministry by donating any of the following items: canned tomatoes, canned beans, 1 liter packages of long shelf life milk, 500 gram packages of pasta, 1 kilo packages of rice, 80 gram and 160 gram cans of tuna, coffee, crackers, small boxes of juice, merendine.  

 

The shopping cart will be at the back of the Church, waiting to be filled!

St. James' Town House is a three story apartment with its own entrance on via Bernardo Rucellai, next to the church rectory and part of the parish complex. It is a spacious 3-bedroom, 3-bath apartment, furnished with antiques, including a beautiful 1826 John Broadwood fortepiano, and overlooking the church and the rectory garden. It is fully equipped with linens for both bed and bath, along with kitchen supplies. There is satellite television that includes many English language programs, a washing machine, microwave oven, and iron. The bedrooms and living room are air conditioned. Off- street parking within the grounds of the church for one car.

Amerigo Vespucci is a fascinating personality, a cosmographer and navigator who was a Renaissance man, a skilled sailor and a proficient astronomer. His first forty years were spent in his native Florence, acquiring advanced scientific knowledge and breathing the cultural atmosphere of the Medici court. Ghirlandaio and Botticelli were his close friends, Pulci and Poliziano frequented his house, he became part of the entourage of Lorenzo il Magnifico and had a brush with the town's gossips as cousin of Simonetta Vespucci, lover of Giuliano and model of Botticelli. Margherita Calderoni is a journalist, art critic and historian based in London.

The British Institute of Florence will have a showing of Franco Zeffirelli's "The Taming of the Shrew" on Wednesday, January 16, at 8:00 PM.

This is the first film to be shown during the Institute's Talking Pictures - Franco Zeffierelli, series shown each Wednesday through March 20 in the Sala Fiamma Ferragamo at the Harold Acton Library.

The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence and the artist Janice Gordon cordially invite you to the exhibit EMBODIMENTS.

 

Janice Gordon is a New York artist who explores the connections between art and science, nature and culture, and the relations between the physical and the metaphysical. In recent years, she has investigated the human body and the ways in which it is perceived. Gordon has shown her work in the United States of America, but Embodiments is her first exposition in Italy. The exhibit is a body of works inspired by the antique anatomical models of the Zoological Section of "La Specola."

 

Hours: 9.30 - 16.30 each day, closed Mondays   

There is no extra charge beyond museum admission for the exhibition.
