Apocalypse and Utopia in the Italian Novel (1945-1975)
The Graduate Studies Seminar at Villa la Pietra, NYU Florence, cordially invites you to a lecture by Florian Mussgnug, University College London on Tuesday, October 16 at 6:00 PM.
Inquiries into the cultural legacy of religion in modern secular life find an object of particular interest in nuclear-war literature of the cold-war period. Rarely, if ever, in the Twentieth Century were thoughts about temporality and eternity, reflections about the nature of evil, and expectations of universal justice as manifest as in the novels and films of the second half of the century. Secular doomsday novels of the atomic age, despite their focus on man-made apocalypse, are steeped in the dark language and violent symbolism of Revelation. Popular religious apocalypticism, with its heightened sense of expectation, stark visions of good and evil, and consistent emphasis on community and collective responsibility appeared to many like the only valid response to the terrible new responsibility that came with the capacity to wipe out life on earth. The atomic age, with its global experience of helplessness and fear of imminent doom, appeared to shift the emphasis away from the figure of the Self and towards the figure of a mysterious and threatening Other.

A New Theatrical Collaboration between the Cities of Florence and Los Angeles
An Explorer's Desire is a multilingual exploration of the contemporary immigrant experience, in honor of l'Anno Vespucciano. Six short pieces written by authors from Florence and Los Angeles, exploring the issues of immigrant experience in these two iconic cities, will be performed by international artists and US university students on Thursday, October 18, at 9.00 PM in the Sala Vetrate, SUC, Piazza delle Murate. The performance is free and with subtitles.
This project is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles, and with generous support from the Comune di Firenze.
