What God Can Do
It's a beautiful thing to see what God can do in a person's life. Over and over again, I am amazed and touched by the faith, hope, and love God gives to those who reach out to Christ in the midst of so much poverty, suffering, and struggles here in Southeast Asia.

In early March, Jill and I traveled from Myanmar, where I just finished another semester teaching at Myanmar Institute of Theology, to Kampot, Cambodia. There we conducted a week long workshop for 40 pastors and Christian leaders on "The Spiritual Journey: Spirit-Led Living for Leaders." Once again we were deeply touched hearing more stories of how God encourages and strengthens believers in many life-changing ways.

Ran Kimeng, for example, was born into a Buddhist family in rural Cambodia. His father was a witchdoctor, and the family lived in fear of spirits and demons with no real hope for their lives. Yet, one by one, God brought each member of the family to faith in Christ. First, the older brother. Then Ran when he was 15. Though his father was furious and promptly kicked him out of the house for six months, he too unexpectedly became a Christian. The mother came to faith last and with the most resistance. Almost immediately after her husband's conversion, she developed breast cancer. She was sure that the spirits were punishing her for her husband's new faith in Christ. She begged him to return to his former animistic practices, but he refused. At which point, Ran's mother did an about face and put her faith in Jesus for herself. Within three days, her greatly enlarged breast returned to normal size. The cancer was completely gone. Today, 16 years later, Ran works with orphans and runs a Christian-based sports program. Both brothers are involved in full time ministry, and their father is an elder and evangelist.

Stories like Ran's are so inspiring. Yet, at the same time, the needs for spiritual nurture and spiritual leadership for believers and their pastors alike are great. Cambodian Christians, only .2% of the entire population, face many overwhelming challenges, discrimination, and sometimes outright persecution. The churches are usually tiny, and most pastors are ill-educated. A relatively small percentage may have had only one year of Bible school, practically none seminary. In the provinces, most pastors get little or no salary from the church but serve sacrificially at their own expense out of a desire to tell others about Jesus.

To help address this pressing need for pastoral training, Faith, Hope, and Love Global Ministries partners with Pastor Sin Somnang (who goes by Smith). Smith has a vision for creating a network among the 2000 or so independent pastors scattered around the country. For the second time in three years, his leadership committee invited Faith, Hope, and Love to offer practical training to strengthen pastors' relationships with God and to equip them to serve as Spirit-led leaders. After this year's workshop, Pastor Smith wrote these words of appreciation:
It has been most exciting to me personally to see how the Lord has brought us global missions partners in Faith, Hope and Love Global Ministries... You are serving Cambodian pastors by nurturing so many top leaders and potential leaders in each province. Through your teaching we are learning how to live more disciplined lives, to grow in knowledge of practical theology, and to be more committed to be healthy pastors, who lead healthy churches, and effect a healthier society... Thank you! -Sin Somnang

Please pray for the estimated 2 million pastors in underdeveloped countries who desperately need training in order to serve Christ more effectively. We also need your financial support for our work to provide Christian leadership development globally. If God is leading you to give at this time, please follow this link to make a contribution. Thank you for your prayers and support.
