A New Look, A New Domain, New Emails

OTS is thrilled to announce that we are redesigning our website to a cleaner and more easily navigable site, providing all users with a better experience and more relevant information.

The first section to be upgraded is our Education section. For a sneak peak into the new look, click on the image and take a quick tour of the
redesigned Education pages.

The new layout also has the benefit of being mobile-friendly, making it easier to access OTS information on the go. The other sections of the website will transition to the new format over the coming year.

Our new website address is now:

www.tropicalstudies.org

With this change, all OTS staff members will receive a new email address as well. To look up a new email, you can use this search tool:

http://tropicalstudies.org/clients/search_staff/search_staff.php

We are doing our best to move this process forward with as few errors as possible. However, a change this complex is  expected to have a few glitches. If you experience an issues with the new site,  see a typo, broken link, or incorrect information, we want to know! Please email us at info@tropicalstudies.org to report any of these issues. Thank you!

Nothing can replace the hands-on experience of a field-based course in the tropics!

"Generation of science" is the product of our graduate field courses, where doing research in premier biological stations in the tropics provides students with the perfect scenario to test their theoretical knowledge. New species, new methods, new processes and more data, results in scientific articles that promote biodiversity conservation as well as the future of your career.

Open enrollment for all specialty courses
. Partial scholarships are available.

Inquiry in Rainforests: an in-service program for teachers

Inquiry in Rainforests, an in-service program for teachers, is a 2-week program that aims to improve K-12 science teaching by helping teachers DO science - by conducting open-ended, inquiry-based research. Teachers also receive training in filming and producing videos for use in teaching. The course includes discussions of tropical ecosystems and conservation, research focused on organisms and ecological concepts, and development of teaching and assessment plans for use in home institutions. For the most current information available, please visit inquiryinrainforests.org.July 8 - 21, 2015

News From South Africa

The latest South Africa Newsletter, documenting the progress an activities of our current Undergraduate program, has now been released. As always, the group is simultaneously exhausted and exhilarated from the great variety of activities and educational challenges.

 Excerpt:

In the third leg of the course, we left Cape Town and drove south towards the southernmost tip of

Africa, Cape Agulhas. The group stayed at the Potberg Environmental Education Centre inside

De Hoop Nature Reserve. Situated in the beautiful Cape floristic region, De Hoop is a haven for both terrestrial and marine animals. A number of our students frequently encountered the rare Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, and Eland during their evening runs, while Cape Vultures graced our skies as they soared from their nearby colony.

In De Hoop, students were introduced to their first Faculty Field Projects (FFPs). These projects are an opportunity for scientists working within South African systems to conduct research projects with our

students. Through these projects, students are exposed to a greater variety of research as well as

to potential career paths available to them in the field of biology.

Images of the newly discovered glass frog, Hyalinobatrachium dianae, were circulating the internet recently due to the species' uncanny resemblance to the famed Muppet character, Kermit the Frog.

The species was discovered by a team (Brian Kubicki, Stanley Salazar, and Robert Puschendorf) of the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center. The vast interest in the species gave researchers a great opportunity to highlight two major threats to these amphibians in Costa Rica - habitat loss due to deforestation and the chytrid fungus, which is linked to the disappearance of several frog species in Costa Rica. Long-time OTSer, Dr. Steeven Whitfield of Gonzaga University, provided commentary to National Geographic.
