Picture of the Month

The small stingless bees (Tetragonisca angustula) make their nests under rocks, inside hollow stumps, or even within cracks in walls. Here we see one individual taking off from the tube-like entrance of its subterranean nest.

10th Iteration of NAPIRE: An Amazing Success Story

Summer 2014 marked the tenth iteration of OTS's Native American and Pacific Islander Research Experience Program (NAPIRE) in Costa Rica. NAPIRE is funded by the NSF's Louise Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. Each year, approximately twenty Native American and Pacific Islander undergraduate students conduct original field ecology research at the Las Cruces Biological Station in Costa Rica.

This summer's students represent accredited academic institutions from all over the United States and the Pacific Islands, including such far-flung places as Alaska, Guam, and Micronesia. Student research topics covered topics such leaf litter organisms and ecology, stream ecology, plant-animal interactions, and animal behavior and ecology. In addition to being guided by Ph.D. Research Mentors on ecological research projects, the students also visited three indigenous groups in Costa Rica and had many opportunities to learn more about Costa Rica's culture and history. An interesting addition to this year's programming was a weekly Stories We Tell session in which students, mentors, and staff describe their experiences and impressions from their adventures during the Program.

This fall, many NAPIRE students and some mentors will be attending national conferences, such as SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Hispanics, Chicanos, and Native Americans in Science) and AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) to present the results of their research and reconnect with their new friends.

We are already actively recruiting students and mentors for the 2015 NAPIRE Program. NAPIRE Student Award recipients covers the cost of room, board and travel to and from Costa Rica. Students also receive funds to help cover costs of field equipment and a $4000 stipend. If you are interested in learning more or applying for a student internship or to serve as a mentor, please visit our website ots.ac.cr/napire or send an email to the Program coordinator at barbara@dugelby.com

OTS Alumni Facebook Group

Did you know that OTS has a Facebook Group exclusively for OTS alumni? It is a great place to connect with other OTS alumni and OTS. The purpose of this group is to have a place where alumni and professors
course coordinators can stay in touch, discuss research topics and share information.

Group members can also upload files, publications, and photos they wish to share.

OTS will keep group members informed about job openings, OTS research fellowship opportunities, and graduate course offerings, including one-of-a-kind and one-time only specialty courses. OTS will also keep students updated on publications that come from each of its research stations on a weekly basis.

Support Their Take-Off... We'll Cover The Landing

In these tough economic times, OTS undergraduate students often struggle to find the funds to participate in an OTS course. Scholarships are the most common source for tuition, but those funds rarely cover transportation costs.

Help the next generation of scientists by contributing to a Transportation Fund. Up to $500 will be given to a student in need to help pay for airfare and other transportation needs.

2014 OTS Outstanding Student Paper Award

OTS is now accepting nominations for the 2014 OTS Outstanding Student Paper Award, which recognizes excellence in research via an outstanding publication in tropical biology. Applications will be reviewed by an Awards Committee formed by a subcommittee of the OTS Assembly of Delegates. Papers will be judged on the contribution to the field, including originality, study design, and potential impact. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize.

Application Deadline: December 3, 2014.

Photos from the Field

At this very moment, OTS' undergraduate students are immersed in their field experiences in Costa Rica and South Africa. From tropical rainforests to savannah ecology, these future OTS Alums are absorbing all that an OTS study abroad course has to offer. Here are a few photos, direct from their lens:
