Introduction to Tropical Biology- Now in the Field!

An Introduction to Tropical Biology is an intensive, six-week course in field research and tropical ecology. This classic OTS field course, also called the "Fundamentals Course," has trained tropical biologists since the 1960s, using the highly regarded OTS "field problems" approach that focuses on the formulation of research questions, experimental design, data collection, analysis, and oral and written presentations. Students  get extensive experience designing and conducting group and individual research projects across a range of tropical ecosystems. In addition, the course emphasizes skills for communicating science both to scientists and the general public in today's media-based world and will include a video

Searching for Pekpek

OTS alumnus, Andrew Mack, has recently published a new book, Searching for Pekpek: Cassowaries and Conservation in the New Guinea Rainforest, reflecting upon his experiences in a vast expanse of road-less, old growth rainforest of Papua New Guinea.

Searching for Pekpek: Cassowaries and Conservation in the New Guinea Rainforest, is the chronicle of Andy's personal and scientific journey.  His adventure is akin to stepping through a portal into a time and place where ancient cultures clash with modern sensibilities. He tells the story of surviving in a country where there is no access to electricity, health care, roads, telephones, or police, all while searching for a dinosaur-like bird, some species of which can reach 6 feet, weigh 120 lbs, and are one of the few birds that can easily kill people.

He and his co-investigator and OTS alumna Debra Wright, built a research station by hand and lived there for years. Their mission was to study the secretive and perhaps most dinosaur-like creature still roaming the planet: the cassowary.
