Historical Interviews - Part III

As part of OTS' 50th anniversary initiatives, we initiated an effort to interview individuals who were part of our early years and could provide insight into formative events in our history. We are highlighting one video in each newsletter.

Below is an excerpt from our interview with Dr. Edward O. Wilson"This is your century." - Dr. Edward O. Wilson is a Professor Emeritus in Entomology at Harvard University. He is widely recognized for work in biogeography, sociobiology, and the systematics of ants. He was a founder of OTS. Here he speaks about OTS' 50th Anniversary and the future of biology.

Greening Efforts Create Immediate Impact

One of OTS' 50th anniversary goals was to take concrete action to ensure the sustainability of OTS for the next 50 years. One of the most important activities was to the launch a Greening Campaign to transform our stations into models of efficiency and rational consumption of resources such as energy and water.

Our first sustainability initiative aims to reduce our consumption of electricity by 50% in the next 5 years. Our first efforts have focused on the La Selva Biological Station. Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, we are remodeling two laboratories. The renovated labs will include more efficient air conditioning units, sealing windows and walls, and replacing outdated refrigerators with a new cold room.

The impact of these initial changes was dramatic. Our electricity consumption at La Selva has already declined 21% from 2011 to 2013. This has provided positive motivation to move forward with other aspects of the Greening Campaign. Additional components include an educational training program for the staff, students, researchers, and visitors who use our facilities.

Additional steps at all stations include the installation of solar water heaters, replacing ordinary bulbs for LED, and the replacement of ordinary urinals by dry technology.  An additional initiative is to transform one buildings at La Selva into a "Green House" to demonstrate the steps which can be taken to reduce the carbon footprint and operating costs in any house. OTS Annual Meeting In Session

The Annual Meeting of the OTS Board of Directors and the Assembly of Delegates/Board of Visitors is currently being held at the Las Cruces Biological Station and Wilson Botanical Garden. The Board of Directors met earlier this week on March 12-13 and the Assembly of Delegates/Board of Visitors meet March 14-15, 2014.

Board of Visitors members, Nancy Covey and Karen Arras, prepare to leave for Las Cruces.

Each year, the delegates of each Member Institution are invited to participate in this meeting, which provides delegates with an update on the State of the Organization, an opportunity to voice the needs of their home institution, and help set the direction of the organization. Led by Interim Chair of the Board of Directors, Cindy Sagers, the primary goal of the 2014 meeting is to help shape the strategic direction of the organization through discussion, debate, and election of several key positions to the Board of Directors. Through a number of exercises, the group is also identifying strategic initiatives to grow the organization in ways that fulfill our mission and protect our assets.

SOLAR ING Joins Greening Campaign

SOLAR ING's partnership with the OTS Greening Campaign has proven to be invaluable. The goals of our campaign is a great match for their corporate culture and dedication to environmental conservation.  At this time, they have provided deep discounts and donations of solar water heaters and other solar equipment for out stations as well as consulting on the needs of the station. SOLAR ING Project Manager, Adrián Murillo, stressed that "working with OTS it represents an opportunity to show their company interest on providing solutions to protect the environment. SOLAR ING wishes to go beyond the commercial relation and fulfill a social responsibility."

SOLAR ING is a Costarican company eager to help the Costarican society embrace energy efficient equipment. The are participating in the International competition, Solar Decathlon Europe, scheduled for later this year in France.  They will provide all the equipment and the solar engineering know-how to create a house which runs only on solar energy. This project is leaded by the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica.

Student Paper Award Winner Announced

The OTS Membership Committee is pleased to announce the winner of the 5th annual OTS Outstanding Student Paper Award. Samantha R. Weintraub, PhD Candidate, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and INSTAAR at the University of Colorado, has been selected as the winner for her submission, entitled Native tree species regulate nitrous oxide fluxes in tropical plantations. Her manuscript, for which she is the first author of, was accepted for publication in the journal Ecological Applications.

The paper contributes new insight into how tree species traits affect biogeochemical cycles in
tropical forests. Samantha is a graduate student at the University of Colorado and an alumnus of the Spring 2010 OTS graduate course - Tropical Biology: an Ecological Approach. During this course, she met Ann Russell, who is also the co-author and and collaborator of the manuscript. After learning about Ann's work in a long-term replicated tree plantation experiment, Samantha was inspired to  build upon Ann's work. Samantha then applied for and received an OTS Graduate Student Fellowship, which allowed her to return to La Selva to study tree species controls on nitrous oxide emissions.

Congratulations Samantha!

Honorable Mentions (in alphabetical order):

Sarah Battermen, Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University - Key role of symbiotic dinitrogen fixation in tropical forest secondary succession, published in Nature
