Greetings!

SLOWING DOWN

CatsWhile I may not be the best example of it, I am an advocate for the stillness and quietude that November can bring. As days grow shorter I find myself with less desire (and energy) to go and do - and more yearning to just BE. When it's too chilly to go out, it's good to just sit in the sun porch with coffee or tea and watch the leaves turn. My cats - who are always around somewhere - seem especially attracted to my being still. These little beings are great reminders of how important it is for me to just take the time to lie around in the sun or snuggle together when it's blustery out.

My honey, Will, always makes time at the start of each day - even if it's only 10 minutes - to sit and meditate. How unlike me! I stay in bed until the last possible minute. Then I'm up and going till I drop into bed, exhausted and way too late.

How different are my life, my mood, my health when I take more time to be still, be quiet, and listen. Listen to the wind rattle the windows. Listen to the traffic chug past or the purr of the cats. Listen to that still small voice of God saying, "I am here. You are loved."

UPCOMING SUNDAY

November 18 - Lectionary 33
Lectionary Pic November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ's coming again. So the readings today tell of the final resurrection and the end time. In the turmoil of hope, fear, and disbelief that these predictions provoke in us, Hebrews sounds a note of confident trust. Christ makes a way for us where there is no way, and we walk it confidently, our hearts and bodies washed in baptismal water, trusting the one who has promised. The more we see the last day approaching, the more important it is to meet together to provoke one another to love.

Schedule November 11

  • 8:30 a.m. - Eucharist
  • 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
  • 9:30 a.m. - Sunday Forum & Sunday School
  • 10:30 a.m. - Eucharist with Baptisms

Sunday Forum, 9:30 a.m.
The End of the World

Jesus warns of the pending destruction of the temple and foreshadows the coming of false prophets, wars, famine, earthquakes and great sorrows or birth pangs. Join Josh Judd-Herzfeldt in discussing Mark's apocalyptic discourse between Jesus and the disciples. Jesus' words of comfort to the disciples to not be alarmed are more applicable than ever only weeks before the supposed end of world.

Prayer of the Day
Almighty God, your sovereign purpose brings salvation to birth. Give us faith to be steadfast amid the tumults of this world, trusting that your kingdom comes and your will is done through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

NEW MEMBERS - NOVEMBER 2012
AARON MCDONALD AND JEREMY EARLY are very excited to be joining this vibrant and welcoming community. They moved to Chicago in 2011 for professional reasons and really have fallen in love with the city. Aaron is chair of the general education mathematics department at Western Governor's University and Jeremy is an auditor for the U.S. Department of Education. In their spare time, they enjoy being outdoors with their dog, Tia, exploring the city of Chicago and are currently training for their next half-marathon. They also try to get back to see their families in Kansas and Missouri as much as possible.
KELLY, MICHAEL, IAN AND KIPTON JOHNSON
Michael and Kelly were married in 2007 and their son Ian was born in June of 2009. They moved to Chicago in winter of 2010 for a new career opportunity where their second son, Kipton, was born in October of 2011. Michael is originally from Milwaukee and was brought up, baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran church, and even with fond memories of that, became disconnected with the church as a young adult. Kelly grew up Baptist, but wasn't quite sure that the rigid rules and views on the world and religion were what the two of them shared. They started trying out different churches around Chicago upon moving here, and hadn't found the connection in ideals and values in a congregation until attending Holy Trinity this past summer. They appreciate the welcome they have received and the sense of community that is felt from the moment one enters the doors.
BRENDAN, AMANDA AND TAIT O'BRIEN
After leaving the cold of Minnesota in her early 20s, Amanda has lived in the US south, and for a brief time in South Korea with her husband, but is happy to be back in the midwest. She is a veterinarian/medical researcher working from home and/or travelling to laboratories in various areas of the country. Raised in Pensacola, FL as a boy and Brooklyn, NY as a teenager, Brendan graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1994 and has been stationed all over the country and world ever since. He and Amanda jumped at the opportunity to come to Chicago for him to be an Air Force ROTC instructor at Illinois Tech. They have both been in love with Chicago since they arrived in February. They are extremely happy to have found a wonderful church home, really for the first time since they've been married, and can't wait to get involved.
ROXANNE SCHROEDER grew up in the ELCA, finding grace and forgiveness even in the most difficult times. She is a high school social studies teacher at Lincoln Park High School and is drawn to the open, authentic community of Holy Trinity and its connection to the traditions of the ELCA.

SCOTT AND LESLIE KUHAGEN
Leslie grew up in Rockford, IL, and after many years on the east coast is proud to be back in the Midwest where she works as a physical therapist at Swedish Covenant Hospital. Scott grew up outside of Washington, DC in Arlington, VA, met Leslie during college, and after law school in Philadelphia, moved to Chicago where he recently passed the Illinois bar exam. Leslie and Scott are staying busy exploring their new city, and are glad to be joining Holy Trinity.
ERIN DAUBERT has lived in Rogers Park for the past two years. She graduated from Luther College with a degree in political science and Portuguese. Until recently, she worked with young adult and global programming at the ELCA churchwide offices and now works with external affairs and fundraising for RefugeeOne. In her spare time, she enjoys being outside, going for runs, sewing and exploring the city.

Sunday Forum - Christ the King Sunday

November 25, 9:30 a.m.
Christ the King Sunday was established in the 20th century amid a rising tide of nationalism. What does it mean for Christ to be king of the nations? How does the affirmation of Christ's sovereignty speak to our ideas of church, state and nationalism today? Discuss these questions and more with leader Seminarian Marissa Sidars.

Last Sunday's Sermon

November 11, 2012
Lectionary 32b
Mark 12:38-44
Pr. Craig M. Mueller

PEOPLE WATCHING

People watching may be a thing of the past. In earlier times If I were delayed at an airport, taking a rest in the atrium of a mall, or hanging out in a large waiting area ... I may have engaged in that interesting way of passing time. Just watching people. Noticing. Observing. Wondering.

Now I'm more apt to go on my smartphone to make the time pass.

Yet, we are more prone to pay attention and notice things and people when we travel. Particularly if the place is new, strange, or even exotic.

Film Review: Lincoln

Click here to read a review of the film Lincoln. First reports suggest it is a must-see!

Excerpt from the review:

"Thanks to Spielberg's skillful direction and Kushner's masterful screenplay, we find ourselves drawn into the political maneuvers of the times. We can't help by notice how fears and prejudices permeate the debate over the amendment even as they seep into the halls of Congress today. It's fascinating to see what it really took to secure Lincoln's legacy as the "Great Emancipator." Today's politicians would do well to emulate his vision and tenacity in confronting the injustices, slavery, and poverty of our time."
