 Artifacts & Memorabilia Needed for
Missouri State Penitentiary Museum
Call to action goes out to communities across Missouri

Museum PhotoAfter nearly a year of planning and designing, the construction of the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) Museum is nearly finished. The space which will house the museum, located on the second floor of the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) offices at 100 E. High St., has been transformed and the walls are now adorned with information and images relating to the historic prison.

"A lot of thought and hard work has gone into this project," said Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Diane Gillespie. "Now all that is needed to complete the Museum are the prison artifacts and memorabilia we hope the residents of Missouri will be eager to provide."

The CVB is looking for items of interest that fall into one of four themes which make up the MSP Museum concept:

  1. Prison Industries: to include anything made at the prison in the state-owned industries. Items may include license plates, tools, clothes worn by inmates or workers, specialized uniforms, employee ID badges, antique barrels or blacksmithing tools.
  2. Contract Labor/Private Industries: to include anything made at privately-owned industries which used inmate labor such as the Tweedie Shoe Factory, A. Priesmeyer Shoe Company, Star Clothing Factory or H. Bockrath Shoe Company. Items may include estate or family heirlooms from workers (foremen/managers) whose family profited from the industries. Also items such as ID cards or lunch pails from workers who may have worked side by side with inmates.
  3. Inside the Walls: to include any prison memorabilia from within the prison. Items may include personal items from inmates or corrections personnel such as badges, uniforms, art work, report cards or letters. Also items that may have come from the prison office, hospital or kitchen.
  4. Control & Counter-Control: to include the strange and unusual items related to maintaining order at the prison or improper behavior at the prison. Items may include weapons carried by corrections personnel (line sticks, mace, cat-o-nine tails, etc) or confiscated contraband (shanks made by prisoners, brass knuckles, knives, tattooing tools, etc).

All items will be considered on loan to the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau and records will be kept of the origination of each item so that the item can be returned to the owner when the display contents turn over.

If you believe you have a one-of-a-kind artifact which fits into one of the four categories, please contact Sheila Sanford by phone at (573)632-2820 or email at sheila@visitjeffersoncity.com. Items will not be accepted for the Museum without prior approval from the CVB and until the proper paperwork has been completed. If you would like to make a financial contribution to the museum, the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is accepting tax deductible donations.

Lincoln "Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War" Coming to the Rozier Gallery

Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States in 1860 and Americans have continued their love and admiration for him for more than 150 years. On February 20th a new exhibition which vividly evoke's Lincoln's struggle to unite a divided nation is coming to the Rozier Gallery.

"Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War," a traveling exhibition for libraries, was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center. The exhibition will remain in the Rozier Gallery until April 5th.

On February 21st, the Rozier Gallery will hold an Exhibit Opening at 7:00 pm. Justin Dyer will discuss Lincoln's constitutional thought as it relates to slavery, judicial review and executive power. Lincoln remains a fascinating, enigmatic and controversial figure for scholars and students of American politics. Elements of Lincoln's understanding of the constitution continue to challenge us today.

For more information on the Lincoln exhibition call (573) 751-2854 or go here.
