 MSP Tours Extend into November

MSP - Michael Schluester - AHALLPending weather conditions, the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the extension of the 2012 Missouri State Penitentiary tour season into the month of November. A delayed construction project at the prison postponed the start of the 2012 tour season to April instead of March and the State of Missouri graciously granted the CVB permission to extend this year's tour season.

Prison Tour Coordinator Sheila Sanford is excited about the opportunity to continue offering tours into November. "We were disappointed when we lost the ability to give tours in March," said Sanford. "But our phones have continued ringing and visitors have continued pouring in to tour the prison the last few weeks. I know there will be a lot of people excited to come in November."

October tours did exceedingly well. Cooler weather combined with the excitement surrounding Halloween means an increase in interest in Ghost Tours. Despite missing tours in the month of March, numbers are on track to exceed total attendance figures from 2011. Don't miss your chance to tour MSP this year! Visit www.MissouriPenTours.com or call (866)998-6998 to reserve your tickets today.

It's Time for the 2012 Cross Country Championships

It's that time of year again. Thousands of Missouri high school students and their families will descend upon Jefferson City for the 2012 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Boys & Girls Cross Country Championships.

Cross CountryThe event, held annually at Oak Hills Golf Center, brings visitors from all over the state to Jefferson City for the weekend. Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau Sports Sales Manager Chris Wilson works diligently to prepare for this time of year and enjoys the excitement of watching the races each November. With the help of the CVB Athletic Events Committee (AEC), the CVB is able to provide man power for the event in addition to a warm breakfast & sack lunch for the cross country officials and numerous volunteers. The CVB also operates a free shuttle bus during the weekend as a convenience to parents and fans and to help facilitate the parking situation.

As always, we are excited to welcome the visiting spectators to Jefferson City for this recurring event and look forward to sharing our community this weekend! For more information on the 2012 Cross Country Championships, visit the MSHSAA website.

   Charlie Palmer
Follow the Lewis & Clark Trail

Local Lewis & Clark enthusiast and Task Force member Charlie Palmer recently wrapped up work on his new book, "Follow the Lewis & Clark Trail in Missouri." Designed to provide tourists with a way to see this aspect of early American History, the book combines descriptive narratives along with support photographs. Readers will be taken to sites prominently mentioned in the Lews & Clark journals, thus one can see today what they saw in 1804. Additional Missouri points of interest are identified along with related information of a historical nature that adds to the educational experience of following the Lewis & Clark Trail through Missouri.

"Follow the Lewis & Clark Trail" will be for sale at Downtown Book & Toy in Jefferson City. Anyone outside of Jefferson City interested in purchasing a copy of the book for $17.50+shipping can contact Charlie directly at rosescharliep@socket.net. They will be available for purchase after November 2nd.

 Ryan Governors Mansion

Our photographer Anthony Jinson's talent shined during this incredible shoot at the Missouri Governor's Mansion. He worked patiently to capture the best possible lighting and really got a picture-perfect shot of Communications Manager Ryan Winkler in front of one of her favorite attractions. Ryan is lucky enough to regularly host the many travel writers that visit Jefferson City and she swears she never tires of visiting the MO State Capitol or the Governor's Mansion. "I learn something new every time I step inside those captivating structures," she says. "Sometimes I feel like I'm the tourist because I just can't stop myself from asking questions the entire time."
