Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

Do you believe people are doing the best they can? (Pause right now and consider your response, then read on.) I have been challenged this week to look at this statement in terms of how I live my life. It's an important question in education and in helping your kids grow. It's important for us to consider as a Jesuit school, because Ignatius encourages us to meet people where they are and start there. It's important for us as a learning community because we want to exercise curiosity and inquiry so as to grow in our understanding.

Here's what research teaches us. As a foundational principal in survival, each of us does the very best we can with what we know at any given point in time. We want to do our best to live and succeed!

At the same time, we also know that we have room to grow, to learn, and to become our best self.

The research continues to show that those people who trust that yes, people are doing the best they can, tend to display more compassion and meet people where they're at. Those people who say no, people are not doing the best they can, tend to display perfectionist tendencies and are often dissatisfied in life.

So the question must then be reflected upon from the perspective of oneself. Are You doing the best you can right now with what you know to be true, in accordance with what you value? Be careful to not start inserting, "if I were...this or that" such as "if I were more motivated or had more resources or didn't have so much responsibility, etc." Those factors are not in play at this moment, though they could be at some time.

Do you believe your children are doing the best they can all the while they are also "works in progress"? Can you love and accept them for who they are in this moment? Can you accept that others are also doing the best they can?

Life of course, is part of a continuum. Grapple with this along with me, and let's see what we learn together to help our kids.

Thank you,
Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal

Standardized Testing
Iowa and CogAT Assessments
September 21st - October 2nd our 2nd - 8th grade students will take the Iowa and CogAT Assessments.  We use data from these assessments for a variety of purposes, and we ask your help to prepare our students and to create the optimal testing environment in the following ways:
  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time -- do not schedule any appointments during testing
  • Ensure your child gets enough sleep
  • Provide your child a good, healthy breakfast, snack and lunch
At school we will review test taking strategies.  Additionally, we will institute a "Quiet Campus" to provide students the best environment to be able to concentrate and do their best.  Classes will not be interrupted during testing, so students cannot be pulled out of class for appointments.  We appreciate your partnership as we work to help students "show what they know" on these assessments.

Service Opportunity for 7th & 8th Grade
Students and Parents
The Parish needs students and parents to help to sell tickets after Mass for the Tom Booth concert. You will need to arrive 15 minutes prior to Mass or attend Mass and see the usher after communion.  Ticket sales will last about 15-20 minutes after mass ends. Eighth grade students may count this towards their service hour requirement (other). The parish is counting on you, so if you sign up you must keep the commitment or find a replacement.  To sign up click on the following link.  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4eadad229-tombooth

For more information email Mr. Colson at craig.colson@sfxsj.org.
