Dear St. Francs Xavier Families,

Our new school families joined the community this week with our New Family Retreat on Tuesday. We ask current students to host and present, and we can forget how blessed we are until they speak on our behalf. Students share what it's like to be at SFX, what's special about our Ignatian tradition, and they offer words of wisdom. Even our recent graduates wrote letters to welcome the new families and share their advice. When students take the lead, the best of who we are shines.

Today I also attended a luncheon at Channel 3 for Betty Caldwell who was a Silver Apple recipient because of what a student wrote about her impact on his life. (Mrs. Caldwell also was a runner-up for a science grant that allowed each of her students to receive science kits. I say we get her to play the lottery on behalf of SFX because she's on a roll.)

This year before school ended, I experienced a few unexpected waves of discipline issues that truly came out of the blue from students who are terrific kids. With some time and reflection, (and great parent support), each of those students became wiser, more compassionate, and grew as leaders.

While we are reminded that our students are "works in progress," they are growing beautifully, albeit sometimes with rough spurts. It's that time of year when we look back while also preparing for next August. Why do we do it all over again?

As I met with teachers by grade level or subject area teams when school was coming to a close, one question I asked was "What brings you joy in teaching?" The kids were at the center of every response, and nearly everyone said some version of "Seeing the kids grow." That's the vocation of teaching and we are blessed to have teachers willing to keep growing and learning, so they can better serve their students.  We love our students and they know it, they reflect our faith in them, and they reach to become their best selves. Thank you for entrusting your students to us!

Summer's Best,

Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal

St. Vincent de Paul!

Join the Mini Vinnies at St. Francis, a new student and family group that supports our parish's St. Vincent de Paul chapter.  Now that school is out, we invite you to use your free time to help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul feed, clothe, house and heal those who have nowhere else to turn for help.

Here are three opportunities to get yourself-along with your family and friends-involved in serving our neighbors in need with love and compassion.

1. Hold a Food, Water or Clothing Drive (All ages)

During the hot summer months, thousands of struggling families and homeless individuals will turn to St. Vincent de Paul for help to meet their basic needs. You can help them out by organizing a drive to collect:

  • Food (especially protein items like canned meats, peanut butter, tuna, etc.)
  • Water
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Diapers and wipes

To get started Click Here to sign up. Then call (602) 850-6761 to get a SVDP box for your drive and to schedule pick-up of your drive donation. PLEASE NOTE: Please hold these drives outside the SFX school community.
