Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

It's that time of year where you might feel you need to keep a cot at school since you're here so often. Thank you for making everything worthwhile through your attendance, your good cheer, you endless volunteering and giving.

As Mother's Day arrives, followed by Father's Day next month, I realize that we are all mothers and fathers in some form and shape. Mostly because you are constantly giving birth to your kid's next grand adventure. Even when they struggle or make mistakes, when you help them see what's next, as in what do I need to do to make this better - you are bringing about new life.

The sacrifices you make are also endless and trust me when I say that we value all you do more than you know. Mostly because we can never catch up with everything that's happening because your feats are innumerable and your generosity effusive. I don't know how you do it, but we all just do it for the kids, and everyone benefits. I'm deeply humbled, sometimes even embarrassed and at the same time giddy, by ALL you do for us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Moms and Dads are at the center of everything good that happens. You are the lifeline of our school community. If we succeed it's because you were behind us and beneath us and beside us every step of the way. You didn't think you signed up for all this when your child was born, yet your love led the way and continues to do so. Thank you for making SFX great, really great, because your love keeps us growing better and better.

We celebrate YOU,

Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal

7th and 8th Grade Participate In Live Interactive Multi-School Workshop on Modern Day Slavery

Thanks to the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center, sponsored by the Oregon Province Jesuits, our 7th and 8th grade classes were given an opportunity to connect with Jesuit and Jesuit parish-connected schools to learn about Human Trafficking-modern day slavery.  By exploring age-appropriate material about human trafficking, conflict minerals in our electronics and relevant Catholic Social Teaching, the program hopes to inspire students to act for justice in our world.

The webinar:

  • Introduced students to the reality of global and local slavery

  • Included live interaction with students in other schools around the country

  • Used Catholic Social Teaching and prayer

  • Addressed a world issue that will be the theme of Pope Francis' World Day Of Peace message for 2015

  • Helped students understand their impact in the world

  • Drew connections between their electronics and child slavery in mines

  • Engaged students in social responsibility and ethical consumerism
